Episode 2: The Compass Points North

Rain hit the warehouse roof like fingertips drumming on glass.

Elias didn’t go home. He couldn’t. The symbol on the wall had burned itself into his vision. A compass. Four points. But the north point was smudged, as if someone had pressed their thumb there and held it a second too long. A signature disguised as a mistake.

Olivia found him hours later, still staring. She didn’t ask if he was alright. She knew better. Instead she placed a photograph in his hand.

“17th century,” she said quietly. “Naval compass. Used by privateers. Men who lived outside the law and wrote their own rules.”

Elias turned the photo over. The victim sat on the chair with the patience of a man waiting for a train. Hands folded. No fear in his face.

“He’s not concealing,” Elias said. “He’s exhibiting. This is a gallery, Olivia. And we’re the audience.”

His phone vibrated. Margaret Hayes. The FBI didn’t call unless the pattern was already bleeding across borders.

“Three cities,” she said without preamble. “Same chair. Same posture. Same nothing. No DNA, no prints, no witnesses. Now you’ve got a symbol. He’s signing his work, Elias.”

“Or he’s calling me by name,” Elias replied.

In a quiet house across the river, Adrian turned the last page of an old atlas. The paper was thin, yellowed. He traced the Prime Meridian with his fingertip until he reached Greenwich. Then he circled it. Once. Deliberately. Red ink bleeding into the paper like a wound.

The classical music ended. Silence filled the room.

He lifted the phone and dialed a number he hadn’t called in years.

“Nathan.”

A beat. Then: “Adrian. You only call when the night gets interesting.”

“Does it, old friend? Or does it only get interesting when someone is watching?”

Nathan’s voice cooled. “You’re playing a dangerous game.”

“No,” Adrian whispered. “I’m teaching one. The mind always wants to be understood, Nathan. Even when it pretends it doesn’t.”

He hung up before Nathan could answer. Outside, the fog pressed against the window, erasing the city one street at a time.

---

Morning came gray and reluctant. At Scotland Yard, a package waited on Elias’s desk. No label. No postage. As if it had simply appeared. Inside, two photographs. The first: Greenwich Observatory, its dome cutting through the fog. The second: the warehouse chair. Empty now, but waiting.

On the back, in the same red ink, two words: Step 2.

Elias held the photos to the light. The compass symbol on the wall aligned perfectly with the reflection in the observatory’s glass dome.

It wasn’t a clue. It was a map.

And maps only mattered if you decided to follow them.

Somewhere in London, Adrian closed the atlas and smiled. “Come on, Detective,” he murmured to the empty room. “Find your true north.”

The fog rolled back in over the Thames. And the game, which had only been a whisper in the dark, now had rules.
