Episode 3: Where Time Begins

Greenwich smelled like cold stone and old brass.

Elias stood under the dome of the Royal Observatory at dawn. The Prime Meridian line ran through the floor beneath his feet, a thin strip of metal dividing the world in half. East and West. Past and future. He wondered which side the killer stood on.

The package photo was folded in his coat pocket. He held it up to the glass. The compass symbol aligned with the dome’s iron ribs. Perfect. Too perfect. Whoever left it knew this place. Knew the angle of light at 6:12 AM. Knew Elias would come.

“Looking for something, Detective?”

Elias turned. Olivia, coffee in one hand, case file in the other. She didn’t look surprised to see him. She looked worried.

“Margaret’s team pulled records,” she said. “Every ‘perfect’ murder in the last five years happened within five miles of a meridian line. Not just Greenwich. Paris. Cairo. Mumbai.”

“So he’s not killing people,” Elias said. “He’s mapping them.”

A sound echoed above them. Footsteps. Slow. Measured. The kind of steps a man makes when he has nowhere to be and all the time in the world.

Elias drew his weapon. Olivia stayed behind him, her flashlight sweeping the upper gallery. Dust floated in the beam like ash.

The footsteps stopped. Then a voice, calm and familiar, drifted down from the shadows.

“You came,” Adrian said. “I wasn’t sure you would.”

He stood at the railing, silhouetted against the pale morning sky. No mask. No disguise. The respected psychiatrist, smiling like they were old friends meeting for tea. In his hand, an old brass compass. The same red ink from the warehouse stained its face.

Elias raised his gun. “Hands where I can see them.”

Adrian didn’t move. He opened the compass. The needle spun once, twice, then settled. Pointing north. Always north.

“You see it, don’t you?” Adrian said softly. “The world is chaos. But we draw lines. Meridians. Borders. Rules. We pretend we control time. But time controls us. I’m just… correcting the map.”

Olivia’s radio crackled. Margaret’s voice, urgent: “Elias, get out. We traced the package. It was sent from inside the Observatory. He’s been there the whole time.”

Adrian’s smile widened. He closed the compass with a soft click.

“Step 2 was the invitation, Detective. Step 3 is the lesson.” He tapped the glass of the dome. “Do you know why I chose Greenwich? Because every clock in the world starts here. And every clock can be stopped.”

He dropped the compass. It shattered on the meridian line below, red ink spattering across the metal like blood.

When the sound faded, Adrian was gone. Only the echo of his voice remained.

Elias ran to the railing. The gallery was empty. But on the floor, where the compass had fallen, a new symbol had been drawn in red. Not a compass this time. A clock face. And the hands pointed to 3:17.

The exact time the rain had started two nights ago. The exact time the first victim died.

Olivia touched Elias’s arm. “He’s not running from us. He’s leading us.”

Outside, the fog began to lift. But for the first time, Elias felt like he was the one being watched.

Somewhere in London, Adrian walked into the morning light, unwinding the second hand of an old pocket watch between his fingers.

“Tell me, Elias,” he whispered to the air. “When time begins… does it ever truly end?”

The clock in the tower struck once. Step 3 had begun.
