Episode 7: The Teachers

The cribs don’t stop rocking.

Hundreds of phantom babies crying inside their heads. 401 drops to her knees, clutching her ears. “Make it stop!”

The nurse—her badge says HEADMISTRESS KELLER—steps closer. “Lesson 2 is simple, 348. Memory is pain. Obedience is peace. Which do you choose for your friends?”

Hope doesn’t answer. She walks to the crib with HOPE carved in it. Places both glowing palms on the rail.

The crying cuts out. Dead silence.

Then, one by one, the paper stars on the mobile flip back. EAST becomes HOME. EAST becomes MOM. EAST becomes SAFE.

Keller’s smile falters. “You can’t—”

“I already did,” Hope says. “You taught me to forget. I’m teaching them to remember.”

She turns to the other kids. “Look at the cribs. Find yours. Touch it. Remember your name. Before the number.”

Leo runs to a burned crib. 512 on the headboard. He traces letters under it, half-melted: LEO. He gasps. “I... I carved this. Before.”

401 finds hers. 401 and underneath: SARAH. She starts crying. Real tears. “My sister had a doll named Sarah. I named myself after her.”

One by one, they wake up. Names, not numbers. The nursery gets louder. Not with crying. With remembering.

Keller backs up. “Evelyn warned me about you. ‘The door that opens both ways.’” She pulls a syringe from her scrubs. Black liquid. “Then we’ll close the door permanently.”

She lunges at Hope.

Elias is faster. The broken key goes through her hand. Not her heart. He’s not Nathan. He’s not Zero.

Keller screams, drops the syringe. It rolls toward a crib. 399.

A boy, maybe 11, dives for it. Picks it up. Looks at Keller. Then at Hope.

“My name is Michael,” he says. “You called me 399 for three years.” He throws the syringe back at Keller. It shatters on the floor. Black liquid hisses, eating the carpet.

“Lesson 2 failed,” Michael says. “We remember.”

Keller clutches her bleeding hand. Stares at Hope like she’s seen a ghost. “You’re not 348. You’re not the Architect.” Her eyes go wide. “You’re the Error.”

She slams her good hand on the wall. A panel opens. Alarm blares.

LESSON 2: TERMINATED. LESSON 3: CORRECTION.

The far wall slides up. Behind it: a classroom.

Desks. Chalkboard. And 7 adults in white scrubs. All with clipboards. All smiling Keller’s empty smile.

“Meet the faculty, 348,” Keller spits. “You rewrote one room. Ward E has 40.”

The teacher at the front desk taps the chalkboard. On it: LESSON 3: LOYALTY

He looks at Elias. “317. We’ve been waiting. Your seat is still warm.”

Elias recognizes him. From flashes. From nightmares.

“Mr. Graves,” Elias says. “You taught History.”

“I taught your history,” Graves says. “How Nathan found you. How he broke you. How he made you 317.” He picks up chalk. Writes on the board:

POP QUIZ: WHO DO YOU SAVE?

Then he snaps his fingers.

The floor panels above them retract.

Marcus, Maya, and the 10 others fall into the nursery. Landing hard. Surrounded.

Graves points at Hope. Then at Marcus. “Choose, 317. The Error. Or your brother. Only one leaves Lesson 3.”

Hope steps next to Elias. Grabs his hand. No fear. “Don’t play,” she says.

Graves laughs. “Oh, you’re already playing. You just don’t know the rules.”

He nods to the other 6 teachers. They open their clipboards. Each one has a photo. A child.

Leo. Sarah. Michael. The kids Elias just helped remember.

“Wrong answer,” Graves says, “and we start Correcting them. Permanently. Lesson 3 is about consequences, 317.”

The nursery door slams shut. The cribs lock. Bars shoot up.

Elias looks at Hope. At Marcus. At 8 kids who just got their names back.

He tightens his grip on the broken key. Blood drips from his palm where it cut him.

“I’m done with your lessons,” Elias says.

And throws the key.

Not at Graves.

At the chalkboard.

It shatters. Glass and slate everywhere.

The lights die.

In the dark, Hope’s glow is the only thing left. And she’s smiling.

“Class dismissed,” she whispers.
