Hope’s palm hits the stone.
The white gas stops. Mid-air. Like time glitched. Then it reverses. Sucks back into the ceiling vents. The vents slam shut.
Silence.
Leo stands frozen, scalpel still raised. His smile finally cracks. Confusion. “You... broke Lesson 1.”
“I’m not your student anymore,” Hope says. Her voice is steel. Her palm still glows.
The steel door marked LESSON 1: OBEDIENCE clicks. Unlocks.
Elias wipes blood from his cheek. Looks at the 30 kids in the corridor. They’re not moving. Not blank. Just... waiting. Watching Hope.
“She rewrote the gas,” Maya whispers. “Evelyn didn’t teach her that.”
“No,” Elias says. “She taught herself.”
Hope steps forward. Toward Leo. He flinches but doesn’t run.
“Put it down, 512,” she says. Soft. Not Evelyn’s tone. Hers. “You’re Leo. Not a lesson.”
Leo’s hand shakes. The scalpel clatters to the floor. “They said you left me,” he whispers. His voice is 9 years old again. “They said you chose East without me.”
Hope kneels. Pulls him into a hug. “I never chose East. I chose out. And I’m coming back for you. All of you.”
The other 29 kids shift. The word EAST dies on their lips.
Over the intercom, Evelyn’s voice is ice. “Interesting. Lesson 2 begins now.”
The floor panels under them drop.
Not all. Just a line. Cutting the group in half.
Elias, Hope, Leo, and 8 others fall. The rest, including Marcus and Maya, stay up top.
“Hope!” Marcus roars from above as the panels seal.
They land hard. Not water this time.
Carpet. Pink. Faded.
Dolls. Cribs. Mobiles with paper stars.
A nursery. Massive. Hundreds of cribs. Most broken. Some burned. But the air smells like baby powder and bleach. Too clean. Wrong.
On the wall, in crayon: LESSON 2: MEMORY
“Where are we?” one of the kids with Elias asks. 401. She’s 14. Remembers her age. Not her name.
“Ward E starts here,” Hope says. She’s pale. “This is where they take you first. Before the number. Before East.” She walks to a crib. Touches the rail. “This was mine.”
Elias follows. Burned into the headboard: 348. But underneath, scratched deep into the wood: HOPE.
She did that. Before they took the name. Before they took everything.
A mobile above the crib spins on its own. Paper stars. On each star, a word:
MOM
DAD
HOME
SAFE
Then the mobile stops. All the stars turn over.
Every single one now says: EAST.
From the darkest corner of the nursery, a woman steps out. Not Evelyn. Older. Scrubs. Clipboard. A smile that never reaches her eyes.
“Welcome to Orientation, 348,” she says. “You missed your nap. Again.”
She looks at Elias. At the others. “And you brought friends. Good. We were running low on subjects for Lesson 2.”
She snaps her fingers.
All the cribs start to rock. Empty. But rocking.
And from each one, a sound rises.
Babies crying. Hundreds.
Inside Elias’s head.
Hope grabs her temples. “It’s the memory loop. She’s forcing us in.”
The nurse’s smile widens. “Let’s see what you remember first, 348. Your mother’s face? Or the day you forgot it?”
Leo grabs Elias’s hand. “I don’t wanna forget again,” he says. Terrified.
Elias pulls out his broken key. Points it at the nurse. “You touch their heads, I put this through yours.”
The nurse laughs. “You can’t kill a memory, 317.”
“No,” Hope says. She stands. Glow crawling up her arms now. “But I can rewrite one.”
She looks at the crib. At HOPE carved in the wood.
“Lesson 2,” she says. “My turn to teach.”
