The floor is gone.
Elias grabs Hope as they fall. Marcus catches Maya. The rest grab what they can—crib railings, each other, nothing.
They don’t hit bottom.
They hit water.
Black. Cold. It tastes like copper and lilies.
Elias surfaces, coughing. Hope next to him. The 21 others splashing, shouting names. Counting. 21. All here. Alive.
Above them: a hole. The Architect’s Room. 40 feet up. Too high. No way back.
Around them: a cavern. Massive. The water goes on into darkness. And in the center, rising from the water like a throne, is stone. Carved.
A compass. 100 feet wide. The needle: a bridge. Pointing East.
And at the end of the needle, on the eastern wall: a door. No handle. No keyhole. Just one word carved deep.
ORIGIN.
The red light pulses from behind it. Like a heartbeat. Like the bell. But slower. Older.
“Adrian to Elias,” Elias’s earpiece crackles. Static. Then clear. “Foyer’s secure. All 163 kids are awake. They’re asking for you. And Hope. What’s your status?”
Elias looks at the compass. At the door. At Hope, shivering but standing.
“We found Origin,” he says.
“Evelyn?” Adrian asks.
“Empty,” Hope answers. “But she wasn’t the first.”
The water ripples. Something moves under them. Big.
512’s voice echoes from nowhere and everywhere: “Tag, 317. You’re it.”
Then the door opens.
No sound. No light. Just absence. Like the world forgot to render what’s behind it.
A figure walks out onto the needle-bridge. Not old. Not young. Ageless. White suit. White hair. No number on his forehead. Because he was never given one.
He stops at the center of the compass. Looks down at them in the water.
“Hello, children,” he says. His voice is the bell. The heartbeat. The hum. “I’ve been waiting.”
Elias treads water. “Who are you?”
The man smiles. “I am Zero. The one who drew the first map. Evelyn was my student. Nathan was her student. You, 317, were Nathan’s greatest failure.” He looks at Hope. “And you, 348, were my greatest success.”
Hope’s glow comes back. Angry now. “You started Ward E.”
“I started everything,” Zero says. “Ward A through Z. 26 letters. 26 facilities. 26 phases. You only closed two.” He gestures to the water. “Every child you saved down here has a twin upstairs. And a twin in Ward B. And C. And D.”
Marcus curses. “How many?”
“5,200,” Zero says. “When I started. 4,891 now. Thanks to you.”
The red light pulses faster. The water gets warmer.
“Why?” Elias asks. “Why do this?”
“Because the world is broken, 317,” Zero says. Simple. Like explaining rain. “Parents fail. Governments fail. God fails. So I made a new family. One that obeys. One that remembers. One that walks East when I ring the bell.” He steps forward. The bridge doesn’t creak. “Phase One was obedience. Phase Two was choice. Phase Three...”
He snaps his fingers.
All 21 of Elias’s people go rigid in the water. Eyes blank. Including Marcus. Including Maya.
Only Elias and Hope remain.
“...is loyalty,” Zero finishes. “And loyalty, children, must be tested.”
He points at Hope. “Kill her, 317. Right now. And I’ll let your 41 live. I’ll let your 163 live. I’ll shut down every Ward and walk away.”
Hope doesn’t move. Doesn’t beg. Just looks at Elias. “You won’t.”
“I will,” Zero says. “Because I built you. I know every choice you’ll make before you make it. You’re 317. The protector. The father. You’ll sacrifice one to save many. It’s your architecture.”
The red light is a strobe now. The thing under the water circles faster.
Elias looks at Hope. At his frozen family. At Zero.
Then he laughs.
Quiet. Then harder. Until it echoes off the cavern walls.
“You’re wrong,” Elias says. “Nathan taught me obedience. Evelyn taught me choice. But Hope—” he grabs her hand under the water “—she taught me to rewrite.”
He lets go of Hope. And dives.
Down. Into the black. Toward the thing moving.
Zero’s smile drops. “What are you doing?”
Hope answers for him, standing alone in the water now. “He’s not playing your game.”
Underwater, Elias opens his eyes. The thing is there. Not a monster.
A machine. A heart. Metal and flesh. Pumping red light. The source of the bell. The source of East.
And in its center: a keyhole.
Elias pulls the broken key from his pocket. The one with no compass needle anymore.
He stabs it into the heart.
The cavern screams.
Zero staggers. The red light shatters. The 21 in the water gasp and come back to themselves.
The door marked ORIGIN slams shut.
And Zero... ages. 10 years. 20 years. 50 years. In seconds. Until he’s ash on the bridge.
Elias breaks the surface, bleeding from his palm. Hope pulls him up.
The water drains. Fast. Into grates in the compass floor.
In 30 seconds, they’re standing on dry stone. 21 people. Alive. Themselves.
The door to Origin is sealed. The heart is dead. The bell is silent.
Adrian’s voice in the earpiece: “Elias? Seismic activity just stopped. All 163 kids just said the same word. At the same time.”
“What word?” Elias asks.
“*Free.*”
Hope looks at the sealed door. At the ash that was Zero. Then at Elias.
“Is it over?” she asks.
Elias picks up a handful of ash. Lets it fall. “No.” He points at the door. “Ward A through Z. 26 letters. We closed E. We closed A.”
Marcus picks up his knife. “So 24 to go.”
Elias nods. Looks at his family. 21 soldiers. 163 upstairs waiting. 4,728 still out there.
“We find them all,” he says. “And we bring them home.”
Hope takes his hand. “East or west?”
Elias smiles. For the first time in two seasons.
“Doesn’t matter,” he says. “We draw our own map now.”
