Dark.
Only Hope’s glow. Then it spreads. Not light. Memory.
The nursery dissolves.
8 YEARS AGO. WARD E. LESSON 3: LOYALTY.
Hope is 12. Smaller. Thinner. Forehead still raw from the number. 348. Fresh.
She sits in the same classroom. Same desks. Same Mr. Graves. But younger. Less ash in his hair.
“Pop quiz, 348,” Graves says. Chalk in his hand. “Who do you save?”
Two chairs in front of the class.
In one: a girl. 7 years old. 512. Leo. But younger. No name yet. Just bruises.
In the other: a boy. 14. 317. Elias. But before Nathan. Before the scars. Eyes still human.
Both are strapped down. Both terrified.
“Choose,” Graves says. “One lives. One becomes Lesson 4. You decide who we keep.”
12-year-old Hope shakes. “I don’t want to.”
“Choice is not about want, 348. It’s about loyalty. Who are you loyal to? The weak?” He points at Leo. “Or the strong?” He points at Elias.
Young Elias meets her eyes. He mouths: Pick him.
Young Leo is crying. Silent.
Hope stands. Walks to the front. Picks up the chalk.
And writes on the board: NEITHER.
Graves’ smile drops. “Wrong answer.”
Hope drops the chalk. Grabs both chairs. And runs.
Alarms. Guards. Keller. Evelyn.
She doesn’t make it to the door. Taser. Floor. Blood.
They drag Leo and Elias away.
Evelyn Ward crouches next to 12-year-old Hope. Strokes her hair.
“You failed Lesson 3, 348,” Evelyn says. Soft. Almost kind. “But you taught me something. You’re not a door. You’re an Error. A glitch in my architecture.”
She nods to Graves. “Wipe her. Start over. But keep the Error. I want to study it.”
The last thing Hope sees before the needle: Elias being dragged East. Leo being dragged West.
PRESENT. WARD E. NURSERY.
Light slams back.
Hope is on her knees. Gasping. The glow recedes. Elias catches her.
“I remembered,” she says. “All of it. I chose neither. That’s why they couldn’t break me. That’s why I’m the Error.”
Graves steps back. The other 6 teachers raise their clipboards like shields.
“You weren’t supposed to remember that,” Graves says. “Evelyn buried it deep.”
“Evelyn didn’t bury it,” Hope says. Standing now. “*I* did. So I could dig it up when it mattered.”
She looks at Elias. “I met you before Nathan. In Lesson 3. You told me to save him.” She points at Leo.
Leo’s eyes go wide. “You... you tried to save us?”
“I failed,” Hope says. “Then.” She looks at Graves. At Keller. At the 7 teachers. “Not now.”
She slams her palm on the floor.
The cribs unlock. The bars retract.
And every single child in the nursery—Leo, Sarah, Michael, all 8—glow. Faint. Like Hope. But it’s there.
“Lesson 3 is over,” Hope says. “Welcome to Lesson 4: REWRITE.”
Graves runs.
He doesn’t get two steps.
401—Sarah—sticks out her foot. He crashes into a desk.
Michael picks up the broken piece of chalkboard. Holds it like a knife. “My name is Michael,” he says again. “And you called my sister 400 before you killed her.”
Keller screams into a radio: “Headmistress to Architect! The Error is active! Repeat, the Error is—”
The radio cuts. Static. Then a new voice. Not Evelyn. Not Zero.
Deep. Male. Calm.
“*This is One. Headmistress Keller, you are relieved.*”
Keller drops the radio. Face white.
The classroom door opens.
A man walks in. White suit. Not old like Zero. 40s. No number. No smile.
He looks at Hope. At Elias. At the glowing children.
“Hello, Error,” One says. “Hello, 317. I’m the one who wrote Lesson 3.”
He steps over Graves. “And I’m here to teach Lesson 5.”
He holds up a key. Not broken. Whole. Silver.
“*Lesson 5: ORIGIN.*”
