Bölüm 13

Episode 13: Numbers

Elias hits the door.

No handle. No lock. Just the plaque: THE ARCHITECT.

The silver key in his hand burns cold.

He slams it against the plaque.

The door doesn’t open. It remembers him.

ACCESS: 317. WELCOME HOME.

The door dissolves. Not swings. Dissolves into light.

Elias stumbles through.

The Architect’s Room is not a room.

It’s a library.

Circular. Floor to ceiling. No books. Files. Thousands. All paper. All old.

Each shelf marked with a Ward. WARD A through WARD Z.

And in the center: a desk.

At the desk: a boy. 10 years old. Back to them. Writing in a ledger. Slow. Careful.

He doesn’t look up. “You’re late, 317.”

Evelyn Prime’s grip on Hope loosens. She turns her head toward the room. For the first time, something like fear crosses her face.

“Zero,” One whispers. “He’s awake.”

The boy stops writing. Closes the ledger. Turns.

Not Zero. Not the old man from London.

This Zero is 10. Same eyes. Same absence of smile. Wearing a Ward E uniform. Stained. 000 on the chest.

“Hello, Error,” Zero says to Hope. “Hello, Key,” to Elias. “Hello, Failure,” to One. “Hello, Mother,” to Evelyn Prime.

Evelyn Prime drops Hope. Takes a step back. “My son.”

“Your experiment,” Zero corrects. He hops off the chair. Bare feet on stone. “You made 26 Wards to find God. You only made one son to kill Him.”

He walks to the WARD E shelf. Pulls a file. 348. Throws it at Hope. “Your origin. Read it later.”

Pulls another. 317. Tosses it to Elias. “Yours. Nathan redacted most of it. I unredacted it.”

Pulls a third. 512. Holds it out to Leo. “Yours. Page 3 is where they took your name. Page 17 is where you gave it back.”

Leo doesn’t move. He’s on the floor. 399 and 401 next to him. All 8 kids still clutching their heads, lilyums burning through their skulls.

Evelyn Prime recovers. “You can’t be here. I locked this room. I locked you.”

“You locked a body, Mother,” Zero says. “I left it. Bodies are slow. Numbers are faster.” He taps his temple. “I’m in the walls now. In the roots. In the bone.”

He looks at the ceiling. At the hole the bone branch came through. “I sent that to say hello. You cut it, 317. Good. That was the test.”

Elias steps forward, still bleeding. “Test for what?”

“To see if you were worth saving,” Zero says. Simple. “Nathan thought so. I disagreed. Now I don’t.”

He walks to Evelyn Prime. She’s taller. He doesn’t care.

“You built 26 Wards to make a god,” Zero says. “You failed 26 times. Because you kept starting with children. Gods don’t start as children, Mother. They start as numbers.”

He snaps his fingers.

The files on the WARD E shelf fly out. Hundreds. They circle the room. Then they open.

Names. Not numbers. Photos. Birthdays. Death days.

349: ALINA. DIED LESSON 2. AGE 9.

350: DAVID. DIED LESSON 4. AGE 11.

351: MIRIAM. DIED LESSON 1. AGE 7.

On and on. 163 files. 163 dead kids.

The kids on the floor stop screaming. They look up. See the files. See the faces.

“Michael,” 399 whispers, reading his. “I had a brother. 398. Thomas.”

“Sarah,” 401 says. “400 was Anna. She... she held my hand during Lesson 1.”

Leo finds 500. The withered lilyum. The file says: 500: JAMES. DIED LESSON 5. AGE 8. NOTES: REFUSED TO FORGET.

Leo starts crying. “I told him to hold on. I told him I’d come back.”

Zero watches. No emotion. “Evelyn called them numbers. One called them seeds. I call them debt.”

He turns to Evelyn Prime. “You owe 163 lives, Mother. And the Garden is here to collect.”

Evelyn Prime lunges. Not at Zero. At the files. To burn them. To erase them again.

Hope moves first. She grabs Evelyn’s arm. Her palm glows gold again.

“You don’t get to forget them,” Hope says. “And you don’t get to make us forget either.”

The gold light travels up Evelyn’s arm. Into her chest. Into her head.

Evelyn Prime stops. Shudders.

And remembers.

Every name. Every face. Every scream. 163 lives. All at once.

She drops to her knees. Not in pain. In weight.

“I... I...” she chokes.

“You,” Zero says. “Are obsolete.”

He looks at Elias. Holds out his hand. “Key.”

Elias gives him the silver duplicate.

Zero walks to the desk. Opens a drawer. Inside: a real key. Bone. Carved. 000.

He takes it. Closes the drawer.

“Lesson 6 is over,” Zero says. “Lesson 7: DEBT.”

He looks at One. “You built the Garden. You kept the books. Time to pay.”

He looks at Hope. “You inherited it. Time to decide the price.”

He looks at Elias. “You broke your chain. Time to see what freedom costs.”

The files stop circling. They fall. Gently. Like snow. Covering the floor. Covering Evelyn Prime. Covering Ward E.

Zero walks to the door.

“Zero,” Elias says. “Where are you going?”

“Up,” Zero says. “To collect from Ward F. Then G. Then H. All the way to Z.” He pauses. “You coming, 317? The Error? Or do you want to stay and count the dead?”

He doesn’t wait for an answer. He steps out.

The bone key in his hand drips black sap.

And the whole of Ward E starts to collapse.
