The bone branch doesn’t stop.
It punches through dirt, through lilyums, through air. Straight at Hope’s heart.
Elias moves. No thought. Just body. He shoves Hope aside and takes the hit.
The bone goes through his shoulder. Not his heart. Exit wound out the back. It pins him to the ground. To the dead mound of 317.
He doesn’t scream. Ward E taught him not to.
Hope screams for him.
The Garden screams with her. Every lilyum opens, wails. Sound without sound. It hits the bone branch like a pressure wave.
The branch cracks. Splinters. Withdraws. Up. Up. Back through the ceiling. Dragging black sap and Elias’s blood with it.
“Elias!” Marcus is suddenly there, dropping from the crack above. He rips his shirt, presses it to the wound. “Stay with me, little brother.”
One watches, still bound by vines. “Protocol Branch. Zero doesn’t ask. He takes.”
Hope is on her knees, hands over Elias’s shoulder. Her glow is back. Not black anymore. Gold. Warm. “Hold on,” she whispers. “I got you. I got you.”
The gold light sinks into the wound. Blood stops. Flesh knits. Not perfect. Not painless. But he won’t bleed out.
Elias gasps. “I’m... I’m okay.” He looks at the ceiling. At the hole the branch left. “He knows we’re here.”
“He’s always known,” One says. “Zero built Ward E. I just gardened it. The Architect’s Room is his. Always was.”
Hope stands. Black eyes gone. Hers again. Tired. Angry. “Then take us there.”
The vines release One. He rubs his wrists. Looks at the dead 348 lilyum in Hope’s hand. “You pulled your root. You’re not bound to the Garden anymore. You sure you want to go deeper?”
“Evelyn’s dead to me,” Hope says. “You’re next. Zero’s after that. Then we burn all 26.”
One almost smiles. “That’s the Error talking. I like her.” He points past the lilyums, to a wall covered in roots. “Architect’s Room is through there. But Zero left a guard dog.”
He claps twice.
The root wall peels open.
No room. A hallway. Long. White. Sterile.
At the end: a door. No handle. No keyhole. Just a plaque.
THE ARCHITECT
And in front of it: a chair.
In the chair: Evelyn Ward.
Not old Evelyn. Young Evelyn. 30s. No wrinkles. No ash. But her eyes. Those are the same.
She’s not breathing. She’s not rotting. She’s waiting.
“A backup,” Marcus breathes. “Like the lilyums.”
“Better,” One says. “This is the original. Evelyn Prime. Zero kept her. For parts.”
Evelyn Prime opens her eyes. Stands. Smooth. No stiffness. No age.
She looks at Hope. Tilts her head. “348. You bloomed.”
Then at Elias. At the blood on his shoulder. “317. You bled. Good. The Garden needs blood to remember.”
She steps forward. The hallway lights flicker. Each step, a memory plays on the walls. Evelyn teaching. Evelyn cutting. Evelyn planting.
“Zero said you’d come,” Evelyn Prime says. “He said the Error would bring the Key. He said I should thank you.”
She smiles. It’s worse than Graves’. Worse than One’s. It’s the first smile. The one all the others were copied from.
“Thank you, 348,” she says. “For bringing me my seeds.”
She looks past them. At Leo. At Sarah. At Michael. At all 8 kids.
“Lesson 6: Inheritance,” Evelyn Prime says. “You took my Garden, Error. Now I’ll take your family.”
She raises her hand.
The kids scream. All 8. Hands to their heads. 512, 401, 399—their lilyums upstairs flare back to life, burning.
“Stop!” Hope runs at her.
Evelyn Prime catches Hope by the throat. One-handed. Lifts her. “You are not the Architect, Error. You are a tool. And tools get shelved.”
Elias grabs the silver key. Looks at One. “How do we kill her?”
“You don’t,” One says. “She’s not alive. She’s a protocol. Written in bone and blood.” He nods at the plaque on the door. THE ARCHITECT. “Zero is the only one who can delete her. And he’s not here.”
“Bullshit,” Marcus says. He fires. Three shots. Center mass.
The bullets hit. Evelyn Prime doesn’t flinch. The holes close. Like water.
She turns to Marcus. “317’s brother. 322. Your lilyum is still healthy. Would you like to see it?”
The roots in the wall move. They drag something forward.
A lilyum. 322. Marcus’s. But it’s not black. It’s red. Wet. Beating.
Like a heart.
Elias looks at the key. At the door. At THE ARCHITECT.
Then at Hope, choking in Evelyn’s grip.
He makes a choice.
And runs for the door.
