Episode 14: The Choice

Ward E screams.

Not people. Stone. Concrete. Steel. The whole place was built on roots and bones. Now the roots are letting go.

The ceiling drops dust. Then chunks. The floor tilts. East.

“Move!” Marcus grabs Leo and Sarah. “Stairs are gone. We go through the Garden!”

Evelyn Prime doesn’t move. She’s buried under 163 files. Each one a name. Each name a weight. She’s not dead. She’s drowning.

One watches the collapse. No panic. Just calculation. “Zero always preferred demolition to renovation.”

Hope is at Elias’s side. His shoulder is still bleeding, the gold light fading. “Can you walk?”

“Can you?” he counters. Her nose is bleeding now. Using the Garden’s power is costing her.

The 8 kids are conscious. Scared. But standing. Michael holds 399. Sarah holds 401. Leo holds 512. His lilyum file, crumpled in his fist.

Zero is already up the hallway. Not running. Walking. Like he has all the time in the world. The bone key swings from his hand. Every step he takes, another piece of Ward E gives up.

“Hope,” Elias says. “The Garden. Can you hold it?”

Hope closes her eyes. Reaches. The lilyums upstairs, the roots in the walls, the whole underground network. It answers. But it’s weak. Torn.

“I can hold it,” she says. “Or I can move the kids. Not both.”

Another crash. The foyer above caves in. Adrian’s voice echoes down: “We’re cut off! Find another way!”

One steps over a falling beam like it’s nothing. “Lesson 7, Error. Debt. Zero is going to Ward F to collect. 400 more kids. If he gets there first, he ‘saves’ them his way. You know what that means.”

Zero’s way. Numbers, not names. Efficiency, not mercy.

Hope looks at Elias. At the kids. At the Garden. At Zero’s back disappearing up the hall.

Three choices. Only one timer.

“Marcus,” she says. “Take the kids. Go up through the crack Zero made. The roots won’t hurt you. Not now. Find Adrian. Get to the surface.”

“What about you?” Marcus says.

Hope looks at Elias. “We’re going after Zero.”

“The Garden dies if you leave,” One says. Not a threat. Fact. “All the backups. All the memories. Ward E gets wiped. Evelyn wins.”

Evelyn Prime laughs under the paper. Wet. Broken. “I always win, 348. Even dead, I—”

Hope stomps on the files. On Evelyn. “You don’t get to talk.”

She kneels. Presses her palm to the dirt. To the root of 348. The lilyum that started it all.

“Elias,” she says. “I need your blood again.”

He doesn’t ask. Holds out his hand. She cuts his palm with a piece of fallen plaque. THE ARCHITECT. His blood drips onto the root.

“Hope, what are you—”

“Paying the debt,” she says. “Zero said we owe 163 lives. Fine.”

The Garden drinks. The lilyums upstairs stop burning. The kids gasp. The pain leaves their heads.

But Hope goes gray. All the gold leaves her. She slumps.

“I gave it back,” she whispers. “All 163. Their memories. Their names. Into the roots. The Garden will keep them. Even if it dies.”

One stares. “You traded yourself.”

“I traded my claim,” Hope corrects. “I’m not the Architect anymore. I’m just 348.” She looks at Elias. “And you’re just 317.”

Elias catches her before she falls. “Then we’re just us.”

The floor gives out.

Marcus grabs Leo and jumps for the crack as the Architect’s Room starts to slide. “We’ll be topside! Find us!”

One doesn’t jump. He walks to Evelyn Prime. Crouches. “Goodbye, Mother.”

He takes the bone key duplicate from the floor. The silver one Elias dropped.

“Zero forgot one,” One says. “Every Architect needs a Gardener.”

He steps into the collapse. Down, not up. Into the dark under the Garden.

The last thing Elias sees is One smiling. For real this time.

Then the room is gone.

Elias holds Hope. Around them: falling stone, 163 files burning, Evelyn Prime screaming one final time before the dark takes her.

Up is a shaft of light. Zero’s exit.

Elias runs. Hope in his arms. The files turn to ash around them.

They burst into the foyer. It’s rubble. Adrian and Maya are there. With the kids. With Marcus. All alive.

“Zero?” Maya asks.

“Up,” Elias says. “Bucharest.”

Adrian points at the surface door. It’s open. Night air. Cold. Clean.

And standing in it: Zero. 10 years old. Bone key in his hand. Waiting.

“Took you long enough, 317,” Zero says. “Ward F leaves in 20 minutes. Bucharest Station. Train car 000.”

He looks at Hope. Unconscious in Elias’s arms. “You paid for Ward E. Good. Now help me buy Ward F.”

He turns. Steps into the night.

Behind them, Ward E finishes dying. The ground eats itself. The Garden, the lilyums, the files. All gone.

Hope wakes. Just for a second. Looks at Elias. At the ash on his face.

“Did we save them?” she asks.

Elias looks at Leo. At Sarah. At Michael. All 8 kids, alive. Names in their mouths, not numbers.

“Yeah,” he says. “We saved them.”

Hope closes her eyes. “Then let’s go save the rest.”
