Velvet Chains

Bölüm 12

The Labyrinth of Regret

The labyrinth did not merely house the walls of Cross Manor; it breathed with them. Sebastian’s boots crunched against the rotted oak floors, a sound that felt like thunder in the suffocating silence. He was no longer walking through corridors; he was walking through his own fractured memories.

Every time he turned a corner, the architecture shifted. A velvet curtain would dissolve into the shadow of his mother’s mourning dress; a sconce would flicker, revealing the jagged, blood-stained blade he had used to carve his first contract into the estate. The Manor was hungry. It was feeding on his guilt, turning his regret into a physical maze that promised to bury him beneath the weight of his own sins.

*Ivy.*

He reached out, his fingers grazing the wallpaper. The damask fabric rippled under his touch, blooming like a bruised petal. He could feel her. She was everywhere—in the oscillation of the draft, in the faint, lingering scent of jasmine and ozone that clung to the air. But she was intangible, a ghost within the machine, a soul woven into the floorboards and the leaded glass.

"Ivy!" His voice cracked, raw and desperate. He slammed his palm against a gilded mirror. The reflection that stared back wasn’t his own. It was a younger version of him, standing in this very hall, his hands stained with the ink of his binding. "You are mine. You do not belong to this cage. I didn't tear you from your life to let you dissolve into the foundation."

A soft, melodic hum resonated from the rafters. It wasn't human, yet it possessed the cadence of her laughter—a haunting, fragmented sound that made his heart stutter.

*Sebastian,* her voice whispered, not into his ears, but directly into the marrow of his bones. It was cool, smooth, and terrifyingly detached. *Why do you seek a vessel? I am finally expansive. I am the rot and the bloom. I am the silence between your heartbeats.*

"You are a prisoner," he snarled, moving deeper into the labyrinth, his lantern swinging wildly. The flame turned a sickly, bruised violet. "The Manor is using you, Ivy. It’s feeding on your consciousness to sustain its own malice. It’s consuming you, and you’re letting it because you’re afraid of the pain of being human again."

The hallway suddenly lengthened, twisting into a spiral staircase that defied gravity. Sebastian scrambled upward, his chest heaving. The shadows coalesced around him, taking the shape of reaching, spindly fingers. They were cold, biting at his skin, trying to drag him down into the sub-flooring. He fought them with the savagery of a man who had nothing left to lose.

He didn't just want her back; he wanted to possess the woman he had broken. The attraction that had once been a tether was now a violent, magnetic pull. Even without her skin, without the warmth of her blood, the thought of her—the essence of her defiance—made his pulse race with a dark, twisted desire.

He reached the landing, where the portraits of his ancestors hung. They were staring at him, their painted eyes weeping liquid obsidian. In the center of the wall, a portrait of Ivy had begun to form. It wasn't paint, but light and shadow, capturing the way she looked when he had pinned her against the library desk, the fire in her eyes masking the terror he had ignited.

He pressed his forehead against the wall, right where her heart would be in the image. "Come back to me," he commanded, his voice dropping to a low, serrated edge. "If you refuse to leave this place, then I will become part of it. I will carve my soul into these walls until there is nothing left of the Manor but us."

The air grew heavy, static electricity dancing across his skin. The image of Ivy flickered, her face becoming sharp, vivid. For a split second, her hand materialized from the wall, her fingers trailing down his cheek. They were ice-cold, sending a shiver of pure, exquisite agony through his nervous system.

*You would destroy yourself for a shadow?* her voice echoed, deeper now, resonating with the Manor’s own dark heartbeat. *You are a creature of control, Sebastian. To merge with this place is to surrender that. You would be nothing more than a memory, a ghost trailing behind me, watching me exist in a thousand rooms at once.*

"I have always been a ghost," he whispered, turning his face into her spectral touch, his eyes closed, his breathing ragged. The tension between them was a taut wire, humming with a frequency that threatened to shatter his mind. "I have haunted these halls since the day I inherited this curse. But I was never empty until you were taken from me. I don’t care if I cease to exist as a man, so long as I am the one holding your soul in the dark."

The walls groaned. The ceiling split, revealing not the sky, but a swirling vortex of nebulous, starlit ink. Gravity began to fail. Sebastian felt his boots lift from the floor, his body floating in the center of the corridor as the Manor began to fold in on itself. The architectural boundaries were dissolving, erasing the distinction between reality and the prison of his mind.

He saw her then—not as a ghost, but as a flicker of pure, chaotic energy at the center of the spiral. She was beautiful, terrifying, and completely beyond his grasp. She reached for him, not with a hand, but with a surge of atmospheric pressure that pinned him against the ceiling.

*If you want me, Sebastian,* she breathed, her voice echoing in his skull like a tolling bell, *you must be prepared to see what this house truly is. You must be prepared to look at the center of the labyrinth, where your ancestors buried their gods.*

"Show me," he defied, though the weight of her power felt like it was crushing his ribs.

Suddenly, the Manor lurched. The floor beneath him vanished entirely, replaced by an endless, yawning drop into the deep, echoing core of the estate. He began to fall, but as he plummeted, he saw her. She was waiting in the darkness below, her form coalescing into a silhouette of absolute, suffocating elegance.

She caught him—not with arms, but with the raw gravity of the Manor’s heart. As he collided with her, the shock of contact sent a ripple through the entire house. The windows shattered, the foundations shrieked, and the house began to bleed light.

But as they locked together in the suffocating void of the center, Sebastian realized the mistake he had made. He hadn't just reached Ivy; he had triggered the final collapse of the Manor. And as the walls began to disintegrate around them, he saw that something else had been waiting in the dark, something that had been feeding on the Manor just as the Manor had been feeding on Ivy.

Something massive, ancient, and entirely awake began to stir beneath the floorboards, its eye opening in the center of the labyrinth—a golden, reptilian slit that fixated solely on them.

"Ivy," he gasped, his fingers finally catching the ethereal fabric of her dress, "what have we summoned?"
