Chapter 13

As soon as I hung up the phone, the world stopped. My mother's trembling voice echoed in my ears, and I felt my legs wouldn't be able to carry me. My father... was gone. Alp's compassionate looks and whispers faded, replaced by a bitter emptiness.

"Zeynep," Alp said, anxiously taking my face in his hands. "What happened? Are you okay?"

Was I okay? As tears streamed down my face, I shook my head. "My father... I lost my father, Alp." My words were lost in my sobs.

Alp's face contorted with pain. He took me tightly in his arms. "I'm so sorry, Zeynep. So sorry."

I clung to him, as if his presence was the only thing keeping me upright. My father's sudden death... it couldn't be happening. I was going to avenge him. Justice would be served. But now... now I just wanted to mourn.

"Let me take you home," Alp said, the compassion in his voice warming me. "I'll be there for you."

I nodded. I needed him. Despite all the complexity, Alp was the only safe harbor I could find right now. We didn't say a word during the car ride. He just held my hand, giving me strength with his presence. When we arrived in İzmir, seeing my mother's distraught state broke my heart. We hugged each other in tears, sharing our grief.

Alp helped my mother and me with the funeral preparations. He took care of every detail, as if he were one of our family. His selflessness further fueled the complex emotions growing inside me towards him. I was both grateful to him and afraid of him. His secrets, his family's dark past... there were so many things that would separate us.

On the day of the funeral, the crowd was suffocating me. My father's friends, relatives... everyone was offering condolences, but no one could extinguish the fire inside me. In the distance, I saw Alp. In his black suit, he stood like a rock in the crowd. Our eyes met. In him, I could see nothing but understanding and support.

After the funeral, Alp came to me. "Zeynep, if you don't want to be alone, I'm here."

"Thank you, Alp," I said, my voice trembling. "Really... thank you so much."

We stood in silence for a while. Then, with a sudden urge, I hugged him. I wrapped my arms around him tightly. He returned the embrace. At that moment, everything stopped. I could only feel his warmth, his scent, and the frantic beating of my heart.

"Zeynep," Alp whispered, touching his lips to my hair. "We'll get through this. We'll get through it together."

I wanted to believe him. But a voice inside me said that this was just an illusion. We were people from different worlds. My desire for revenge, his family's secrets... wouldn't allow us to close the gap between us.

Days turned into weeks. Although my father's pain did not subside, life somehow went on. Alp was there for me every day. We studied together, ate together, and sometimes just sat in silence. His presence filled the void inside me to some extent.

One evening, Alp took me to the beach. The sound of the waves was soothing my mind. As we watched the sea from the rocks where we were sitting, I decided to pour out my heart.

"Alp," I said, avoiding his eyes. "I'm still angry at you for lying to me. But... but I know you're in a difficult situation too."

Alp took my hand. "Zeynep, I didn't want to lie to you. I just... I was trying to protect myself. My family's dark secrets... have taken me prisoner too."

"I know," I said. "But I won't let these secrets separate us."

Alp's eyes lit up. "Really?"

I nodded. "Yes. But I want something from you. I want you to tell me everything. Your family's secrets, that murder case... everything."

Alp's face darkened. He hesitated for a moment. Then, he took a deep breath. "Okay," he said. "I'm going to tell you everything. But be prepared. Because what you hear will change your life."

That night, Alp told me about his family's dark secrets, the holding's dirty business, and the murder case he was involved in. Every word opened a new wound inside me. But at the same time, I felt a deep understanding for him. Like me, he was a victim. He was trapped in the darkness created by his family.

"So what's going to happen now?" I asked, after Alp's words. "What are we going to do?"

Alp looked at the sea. "I don't know," he said. "But all I know is that I can't do without you."

I approached him and took his face in my hands. "I can't do without you either, Alp."

Our lips met. It was a passionate, longing kiss. As if we wanted to melt all our pain, all our fears in that kiss. But suddenly, a siren was heard. Police cars were approaching the beach.

Alp quickly pulled away from me. "Zeynep, get out of here! Now!"

"What's happening?" I asked, in a panic.

"They... They came to get me," Alp said, his eyes shining in the darkness. "Run Zeynep, run!"

When the police reached us, Alp had surrendered. He looked at me one last time and winked. Then, he was put in a police car and taken away.

That night, I was left alone on the beach. My heart was broken, my mind was confused. Alp had been arrested. And I had to face his dark past. But most importantly, I was determined to save him at all costs. Because I knew that our love could overcome everything. Or, it could destroy us completely.
