Chapter 3: The Corrupted Deck

The drive to the Elias Crowne estate was a blur of smeared neon and relentless rain. Detective Julian Vance gripped the steering wheel, Silas Thorne’s mocking laughter still echoing in his ears. You’re not looking for a killer. You’re looking for a victim of Sterling’s success.

Vance bypassed the main gates of the sprawling Silicon Valley mansion, flashing his badge at the private security detail. The front door was already ajar, swaying slightly in the freezing wind. No alarms. No signs of struggle. Whoever was doing this moved like a phantom.

He drew his service weapon and stepped into the grand foyer. The scent hit him before his eyes could adjust to the dim lighting. It wasn’t the sweet vanilla of the Banshee Blend this time. It was the sterile, sharp metallic odor of ozone and dry ice.

"Crowne!" Vance shouted, his voice swallowed by the sheer size of the empty house.

He found the source of the cold in the sprawling library. But it wasn't the billionaire heir sitting in the center of the room. It was Honorable Judge Richard Harrison—the very judge who had presided over Crowne’s infamous hit-and-run trial, the man who had accepted Arthur Sterling’s fabricated evidence without question.

Judge Harrison was strapped to a heavy oak chair. His lips were blue, his skin pale and frosted over, the room’s ambient temperature aggressively lowered by industrial portable AC units pointed directly at him. He was barely breathing, deep in the throes of severe hypothermia.

Vance rushed forward to untie him, but stopped dead in his tracks. Pinned to the judge’s freezing chest with a silver tie clip was another playing card. Not the Queen of Spades this time.

It was the Jack of Diamonds.

Underneath the card, a small tape recorder rested on the judge’s lap, its red light blinking steadily in the dark. Beside it lay a single, handwritten note on heavy cardstock: Play me, Detective. Listen to how justice was sold.

The killer wasn't just targeting the guilty clients. They were dismantling the entire corrupt machine—the lawyers, the judges, and eventually, the police. The mystery wasn't just about who was pulling the strings, but how deep the rot actually went.

Vance reached out, his hand hovering over the play button.
