Chapter 2: The Banshee’s Whisper

Vance stepped out of Arthur Sterling’s apartment building and into the relentless Northern California rain. The cold air didn’t invigorate him; it merely confirmed the chilling finality of the scene upstairs. Arthur Sterling was gone, and the city’s criminal underground had just lost its best negotiator.

He pulled his phone from his pocket, the screen slick with water. The encrypted message from the unknown number stared back at him: “He bought their freedom, Vance. I’m just collecting the interest. One down, four to go.”

"买了他们的自由..." Vance repeated the Turkish translation internally: Onların özgürlüğünü satın aldı. The meaning was clear. Sterling’s killer was a vigilante, a shadow born from the injustices Sterling had facilitated.

Back at the precinct, Vance ignored the chaotic chatter. He walked straight to the evidence locker, requesting the sealed bag containing the playing card from Sterling's pocket. It was the Queen of Spades, pristine and mocking.

"Officer Miller," Vance called out, not looking up. "Did you run the security logs again?"

Miller approached, looking fatigued. "Three times, Detective. It’s a ghost. The killer knew the precise moment the cameras looped. And they wiped the hard drives, not just the local feed. Professional, calculated. Just like Sterling used to be."

Vance set the card down. He pulled a small, silver tin from his drawer—a tin containing the exact same tobacco blend he had smelled in the apartment: 'Banshee Blend,' the signature smoke of 'The Ice Carver,' a serial killer Vance himself had imprisoned five years prior. The Carver only smoked that blend, hand-rolled in paper infused with sweet vanilla.

"Miller," Vance said, his voice tightening. "Secure a video feed with Pelican Bay State Prison. I need an immediate audience with Silas Thorne."

Thirty minutes later, the sterile walls of the high-security prison were a sharp contrast to the lush forest in the image_3.png cover. In the visitation room, Silas Thorne was already waiting. He was pale and gaunt, his skin resembling old parchment, his eyes black pools of calculation. He looked through the bulletproof glass, his expression a mask of mocking indifference. He was unarmed, shackled, yet he still commanded the room.

Thorne leaned forward, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Ah, Detective Vance. You look thinner. Still letting the job consume you?"

Vance stared back, unflinching. "I didn’t come to trade pleasantries, Silas. You recognize this?" He held up the Queen of Spades through the glass.

Thorne looked at the card, his smile broadening. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Detective. But I prefer more creative calling cards than a playing card. I carve my messages. I don't use cards."

Vance leaned in closer. "And what about the smell? When I found Sterling, his apartment smelled like Banshee Blend and wet ash."

For the first time, Thorne's mask slipped. A flicker of genuine amusement—and something else, perhaps envy—flashed in his eyes. He leaned back, the smile returning. "Banshee Blend. You know I only order it once a year. A fan, perhaps? A very dedicated student?"

Vance didn’t let him retreat. "Sterling bought freedoms, Silas. The message was explicit. 'One down, four to go.' Sterling got them off."

Thorne leaned back against the concrete wall, his posture relaxed. He began to laugh, a low, guttural sound. "Sterling didn't just defend the guilty, Julian. He sold the victims' silence. You remember his clients? They were ghosts Sterling made disappear from the system. He didn't just get them off technicalities; he paid off judges, intimidated witnesses, erased files."

Thorne looked out the tiny, reinforced window. "You're not looking for a killer, Detective. You're looking for a victim of Sterling’s success. Someone who has been patiently waiting in the shadows, growing cold as their hope for justice froze over." He smiled. "And I think you already know who 'two down' will be."

A realization crystallized in Vance's mind. Sterling had facilitated the freedom of dozens, but one case stood above all in its notoriety and public outrage: Elias Crowne, a billionaire heir who Sterling had gotten acquitted after a drunk driving accident that killed a famous neurosurgeon, Dr. Sebastian Crowne.

Thorne recognized the moment of realization. "Run, Julian. Tick-tock. The collective interest is being collected. If you're quick, you might just arrive in time to see the show."

Vance slammed the phone receiver down and stormed out of the prison. He needed to get to Elias Crowne before the vigilante did. But even as he ordered a police detail to the Crowne estate, he knew he was working against a schedule set by a ghost.
