Velvet Chains

Bölüm 8

The Collector's Vault

The fall did not last long, but the sensation of being unmade was absolute. It was as if the gravity of the manor had shredded their very atoms, dragging them through a throat of stone and shadow before spitting them out onto a surface that felt less like earth and more like a cold, pulsating lung.

Ivy landed hard, the breath driven from her lungs in a sharp gasp. The air here was heavy, metallic, and tasted of oxidized copper and ancient secrets. She scrambled to her feet, her hands trembling as she reached out into the oppressive gloom.

"Sebastian?" Her voice was a ragged thread, swallowed instantly by the vastness of the space.

A match hissed to life. The flame was weak, flickering against the suffocating dark, but it was enough to reveal Sebastian. He stood a few paces away, his coat torn at the shoulder, his face a landscape of sharp, marble-white angles. His eyes, usually cold and calculating, were dilated, scanning the abyss with a predatory focus.

He stepped toward her, his movements fluid, unnervingly silent. When he reached her, he didn't offer a hand; he pulled her into the radius of his light, his fingers gripping her chin with bruising possessiveness. His skin was fever-hot, a stark contrast to the glacial temperature of the chamber.

"Don't move," he commanded, his voice a low vibration that shivered against her collarbone. "This room… it remembers you, Ivy."

"What does that mean?" she whispered, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She couldn't tear her gaze away from his. In this light, the hunger in his expression was stripped of its aristocratic veneer. It was raw, unadulterated, and terrifyingly magnetic.

"Listen," he murmured.

She did. And then she felt it.

*Tick. Tick. Tick.*

It wasn't a clock. It was too deep, too guttural. It was the synchronized pulse of a hundred pendulums, echoing from the walls that seemed to flex and contract. The rhythm matched her own heartbeat, pulling her toward an invisible center.

"The manor isn't just a building," Sebastian said, his thumb tracing the line of her lower lip, his touch agonizingly slow. "It is a collector. And it has been waiting for a Blackwood to return."

He shifted his grip, sliding his palm down to the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling in the loose strands of her hair. The proximity was suffocating. She could smell him—sandalwood, stale incense, and the faint, sweet scent of blood. The attraction between them was a volatile chemical reaction, a mounting pressure that made it difficult to breathe. He wanted to break her, she realized, and she was dangerously close to letting him.

"My father," she managed to say, her voice trembling. "His name was on the wall above. How is that possible? He vanished twenty years ago."

Sebastian’s jaw tightened. "He didn’t vanish. He became a part of the architecture. Just as you are currently becoming."

He leaned in, his breath hot against her ear, the tip of his nose brushing the sensitive shell of it. "Do you feel that pull in your blood, Ivy? The way it screams to be opened? It’s not just the house. It’s the legacy. You are the key to the vault that keeps this estate from crumbling into the abyss."

He pulled back just enough to look her in the eye. His pupils were blown, swallowing the gold of his irises. "I have spent years trying to break these chains. I thought I needed a weapon. But I didn't need steel. I needed a bloodline."

He reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out a small, jagged piece of obsidian. It was etched with the same sigils she had seen on the wall—the symbol of the Blackwood lineage. He pressed it into her palm, closing her fingers over it so tightly that the edges bit into her skin.

"Your father didn’t die, Ivy. He left behind a debt. And now, the house is coming to collect interest."

"You knew," she gasped, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "You brought me here for this. You didn't save me from the crypt. You lured me into the mechanism."

Sebastian’s expression darkened, a flicker of something almost like regret crossing his features before he hardened his mask once more. He crowded her, pressing her back against a protruding slab of stone, his body pinning her in place. The wall behind her pulsed, warm and wet, mimicking a living organism.

"I brought you here because I am starving, Ivy," he growled, his lips inches from hers. "And you are the only thing in this rotting world that tastes like life."

Before she could speak, the ticking sound accelerated. It surged into a deafening, metallic shriek. The obsidian in her hand began to glow—a sickly, pulsating violet light that bled through her skin, illuminating the veins in her wrist. The floor beneath them didn't just vibrate; it groaned, a sound of tectonic plates shifting.

"Hold on to me," Sebastian hissed, his hand sliding behind her back, pulling her flush against him. His eyes were wide, fixed on the ceiling. "It’s choosing."

"Choosing what?" Ivy screamed over the sudden, violent roar of machinery grinding into motion.

"The sacrifice," he replied, and for the first time, his voice held a trace of genuine fear.

The wall behind them didn't just open; it dissolved into a vortex of swirling, shadowy mist. A hand—long, skeletal, and wrapped in the tattered remnants of a frock coat identical to the one her father wore in her childhood photos—reached out from the void and clamped firmly around Ivy’s ankle.

Ivy screamed, clawing at Sebastian’s coat, but the grip on her leg was absolute. She was jerked backward, dragged toward the churning black maw of the wall. Sebastian lunged, catching her wrists, his muscles straining, his face contorted in a battle of wills against the manor itself.

"I won't let you," he snarled, his grip slipping as the void pulled her deeper.

"Sebastian!" she shrieked, the obsidian in her hand glowing blindingly bright, burning her skin.

He lunged forward, not to pull her back, but to dive with her. They crashed into the darkness together, the ticking stopping abruptly as the void snapped shut behind them like a hungry mouth.

Total silence followed.

Then, a whisper, right against her neck, in a voice that sounded exactly like her father’s: *“Welcome home, Ivy.”
