The knock at the mahogany door was not a polite request for entry; it was a rhythmic, impatient demand that sliced through the heavy, perfumed tension of the chamber. Lucien’s hand, which had been pressing Colette against the velvet-backed chair just moments ago, froze. His fingers, callous-tipped and warm, lingered for a fraction of a second against the pulse point at her throat before he pulled away.

In that heartbeat of severance, the room felt suddenly cavernous, the air cooling. Colette’s breath hitched, caught in the wreckage of her own composure. She looked up at Lucien, searching for the mask—the cold, calculated aristocrat—but found only a jagged edge of predatory focus in his eyes.

"Hide," he breathed, the command barely audible over the crackle of the hearth. It wasn't a suggestion; it was an ultimatum.

Colette didn't argue. Her skirts rustled like dry leaves as she slipped into the narrow shadow behind the heavy brocade curtains. The velvet was thick, smelling faintly of dust and Lucien’s signature scent—sandalwood, ozone, and the metallic tang of dried blood. Through the thin sliver of fabric, she watched him transform. He smoothed the front of his doublet, adjusted his cuffs with agonizing precision, and assumed the languid, bored posture of a man who owned the world and found it tiresome.

"Enter," he called out, his voice dripping with an effortless, haughty grace.

The door creaked open, revealing the Duke of Valois. He was a man of excessive lace and even more excessive ambition, his face a map of petty grievances and gilded secrets. He stepped inside, his eyes darting around the room with the frantic hunger of a scavenger.

"Lucien," the Duke chirped, his gaze snagging on the half-empty decanter of wine on the side table. "You hide yourself away like a hermit while the court burns. The King is asking for you."

"The King asks for many things, Valois," Lucien replied, his tone dismissive. He remained standing in the center of the rug, effectively blocking any sightline to the alcove where Colette trembled. "Usually, he finds that he can manage the day without my presence to dictate his every thought."

Colette pressed her back against the cold stone of the wall, trying to make herself small. Her heart thundered against her ribs like a bird trapped in a cage. If the Duke saw her—if he realized the daughter of a disgraced marquis was lurking in the bedchamber of the most feared man in Versailles—her life would be forfeit by sunrise.

"You are arrogant," the Duke hissed, stepping closer. "But there are whispers. They say you have been seen in the company of a certain ghost. A girl from the archives. One who has no business in the corridors of power."

Lucien laughed, a low, melodic sound that lacked any warmth. "You talk of ghosts, Valois? Perhaps you’ve been drinking too much of the King’s fermented rot. I have no interest in waifs. My tastes are far more… expensive."

He took a step toward the Duke, invading his personal space. Colette could feel the menace radiating off Lucien, a tangible pressure that pushed back against the Duke’s intrusion. She watched the way Lucien’s shadow stretched long and distorted across the floor, a dark specter looming over the visitor.

"Go back to the ballroom," Lucien murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous, silky register. "Tell the King I am indisposed. Tell him I am… occupied with matters of personal governance. If I see you poking your nose into my chambers again, I shall ensure that your next audience with His Majesty is conducted without the benefit of your tongue."

The Duke blanched, his bravado crumbling like sand under a rising tide. He bowed—a stiff, hasty motion—and retreated, the door clicking shut behind him with finality.

Silence rushed back into the room, thick and suffocating.

Colette stepped out from behind the curtain, her legs feeling like lead. She started to speak, to demand to know why she was being toyed with, but the words died in her throat. Lucien was leaning against the door, his eyes closed, the stillness of the room shattered by the sudden, violent way he shoved the heavy bolt home.

He turned toward her. The predatory mask was gone, replaced by something far more harrowing—a raw, frantic intensity. Before she could blink, he crossed the room in two long strides, invading her space until the heat of his body scorched her skin. He didn't touch her, but he hovered so close she could feel the jagged rhythm of his own respiration.

"You are playing a dangerous game, little spy," he whispered, his gaze dropping to her mouth before snapping back to her eyes. "If you are to survive this court, you must learn to become invisible. Not just physically, but emotionally. You are currently vibrating with terror, and it’s a beacon to men like Valois."

"I am a pawn," Colette spat, her defiance sparking despite her fear. "A tool you use to dismantle your rivals. Why does it matter if I am afraid?"

Lucien reached out, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw, his touch light, burning, possessive. "Because a tool that breaks in the hand is useless. And you, Colette Beaumont, are far too interesting to be discarded."

He leaned in, his lips hovering mere millimeters from her own. She could smell the wine on his breath, mixed with that dark, intoxicating scent of storm clouds. She felt the urge to lean into him, to find safety in the very arms that had orchestrated her downfall. It was a madness, a sickness, but she couldn't tear her gaze away from his.

"Why?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Why keep me? Why not just destroy me?"

Lucien’s expression tightened, a flash of something unreadable crossing his face—anguish, perhaps, or a hunger so profound it bordered on cruelty. He leaned down, his breath ghosting against her ear as he murmured, "Because I have spent years looking for someone who sees the rot in this place as clearly as I do. You are not just a spy, Colette. You are the only person in this gilded cage who understands that we are both already dead."

His hand moved to the back of her neck, his thumb stroking the sensitive skin beneath her hairline, and for a moment, the world of Versailles, the intrigues, and the danger vanished. There was only the heat of him, the promise of ruin, and the terrifying, magnetic pull of the unknown.

He tilted her head back, forcing her to look up at him. "Do you want to know what the Duke was actually looking for?" he asked, his voice a low vibration against her skin. "He wasn't looking for you. He was looking for the ledger I stole from his study last night. The one that proves he has been selling the King’s secrets to the English."

Colette gasped, the gravity of his words finally sinking in. "You have it?"

"I have it," Lucien confirmed, his eyes darkening to the color of bruised violets. "And I have decided that you are going to be the one to deliver it."

He pressed something cold and heavy into her palm—a seal, thick with wax and iron.

"Tonight, at the stroke of midnight, you will go to the chapel. You will leave this in the confessional of Father Thomas. And Colette?" He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that sent a shiver of pure, unadulterated terror down her spine. "Do not look back. Because if you do, the guards waiting in the shadows will not be there to protect you."

He pulled away, the loss of his warmth leaving her shivering. He turned back to the window, staring out at the expansive, manicured gardens of Versailles, leaving her standing in the center of the room, clutching the damning seal as if it were a life raft—or an anchor.

"Go," he commanded, not looking back. "And pray you reach the chapel before the bells toll."

Colette turned to flee, but as her hand touched the door handle, the floorboards beneath her shifted, and a hidden panel in the wall slid open with a sickening grind of rusted metal. Out of the darkness stepped not a guard, but a woman she recognized—the Queen’s own lady-in-waiting, her eyes wide with panic, holding a blood-stained letter that bore the seal of the Crown.
