The Wolf Who Waited

Bölüm 5

[Chapter 5]

The air in the clearing didn't just carry the scent of pine and damp earth; it tasted of copper. Or perhaps that was just the metallic tang of fear rising in the back of my throat.

Luca stood before me, his frame radiating a lethal, coiled stillness. Across from him, the intruder—a man whose face was twisted into a snarl that seemed too elongated, too sharp—held a blade of cold, dull silver. Even from several yards away, the metal seemed to hum with a sickening vibration that made the skin along my arms prickle. It was a predator’s weapon, designed to excise the very soul from creatures like Luca.

"Drop it, Silas," Luca’s voice was a low, resonant rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very soles of my boots. It wasn't a request. It was a sentence.

"She’s a liability, Alpha," the man named Silas spat, his gaze flickering toward me. His eyes were milky, devoid of the deep, molten gold that defined Luca’s intensity. "A human parasite in our den. You know the laws. If she isn't one of us, she’s a target for the Council. If I bleed her, I bleed the secret out of this territory."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. *A parasite.* That’s all I was to them—an anomaly to be culled. I looked at Luca, expecting him to explain, to offer me a shred of protection that felt less like ownership and more like humanity. Instead, I saw a terrifying transformation.

Luca didn’t lunge. He simply *moved*. One second he was standing in front of me, a wall of broad shoulders and dark, predatory grace; the next, he was a blur of motion. There was no sound of a struggle, only the sickening crunch of bone and the harsh, ragged inhalation of a man whose windpipe had been suddenly, violently constricted.

I stifled a scream, pressing my hands against my mouth. Silas crumpled to the forest floor, his silver blade clattering against a jagged rock. Luca stood over him, his chest heaving, his fingers—thick, calloused, and lethal—curled into a fist at his side. He didn't look like the man who had guided me through the forest trails. He looked like the apex of a food chain I hadn't realized I was part of until today.

"She is not a parasite," Luca growled, his voice dipping into a guttural register that made my own blood sing in response—a terrifying, biological betrayal. "She is mine. She has been mine since the blood touched her skin twenty years ago."

He turned. His eyes locked onto mine, and the violence evaporated, replaced by a dark, hungry possessiveness that felt heavier than the forest canopy above us. He walked toward me, his movements fluid, predatory. I tried to back away, but my heel caught on a root, and I stumbled, falling back against the rough, moss-covered bark of a towering spruce.

Luca was there in an instant. He didn't help me up; instead, he stepped into my space, bracing a hand on the trunk on either side of my head. He trapped me, his body shielding me from the rest of the clearing, from the dying whimpers of the man he’d just dismantled, and from the cold reality of the world I had wandered into.

"Look at me, Beatrice," he commanded, his voice dropping to a velvet whisper that brushed against my ear.

I couldn't look away. The scent of him—cedar, ozone, and something ancient—overwhelmed my senses, dulling my logic. My pulse spiked, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the fluttering of a moth caught in a web. "You're a monster," I whispered, though the words lacked the conviction they deserved. They felt like a plea.

"I am the only thing standing between you and the earth they want to bury you in," he countered. He leaned closer, his face mere inches from mine. I could feel the heat radiating from his skin, a furnace of suppressed power. He tilted his head, his gaze tracing the line of my jaw, lingering at the pulse point in my throat. He didn't touch me—not with his hands—but the way his eyes tracked my breathing felt like a physical caress. "You feel it, don't you? The shift in your veins. The way the forest breathes with you now."

I shivered, the cold of the mountain night biting into my skin, yet the proximity of his body made me feel feverish. "I feel like I'm losing my mind," I breathed.

"You're only beginning to find it," he murmured. He leaned in further, his lips ghosting over the sensitive skin of my temple. I tensed, my fingers curling into the fabric of his heavy jacket. The power imbalance was staggering. He was the wolf; I was the prey he had decided to keep. He could snap my neck as easily as he had silenced the man on the ground, yet here he was, breathing for me, anchoring me to the spot.

"Why?" I asked, my voice barely audible. "Why mark me? Why wait?"

Luca’s hand finally moved, rising to trace the curve of my cheek with his thumb. His skin was rough, a stark contrast to the softness of my face, and the touch sent a jolt of raw, electric awareness through me. He didn't answer immediately. He leaned down, his breath warm against my cheek, his eyes darkening until they were almost black.

"Because the forest never forgets a debt, Beatrice," he whispered, his thumb pressing firmly against my lower lip, forcing it to part slightly. "And I have been hungry for a very, very long time."

Before I could process the threat—or the promise—in his tone, the woods went deathly silent. Not the silence of peace, but the silence of a hunting ground. A low, rhythmic howling began to echo from the distant ridges, answered by a cacophony of snarls that sounded far too close for comfort.

Luca’s expression sharpened. His grip on the tree shifted, his knuckles turning white. He turned his head toward the darkness, his nostrils flaring as he scented the wind. The possessiveness in his gaze turned to something sharper, colder.

"They’ve found the scent," he hissed, turning back to me, his fingers gripping my chin with sudden, bruising force. "Listen to me, and listen well. If you want to survive the night, you don't run from the pack. You run to me."

He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine—a fleeting, searing contact that shattered the last of my composure—before he pulled away and whispered a name that turned my blood to ice.

"They aren't here for me, Beatrice. They’re here for the girl who carries the Mark of the Alpha—they’re here for the catalyst."
