The Wolf Who Waited

Bölüm 11

[Chapter 11]

The roar of the fire was a living thing, a hungry beast devouring the timber and history of the cabin. Smoke curled in thick, choking ribbons, stinging my eyes and turning the air into a suffocating shroud. Through the dancing orange haze, the silhouette of the intruder solidified. It was Kael, a man whose reputation as a butcher preceded him in the whispers of the forest. He stood framed by the flames, his eyes reflecting the inferno with a terrifying, hollow light.

"Luca," Kael purred, the sound cutting through the crackle of burning pine. "You’ve made a nest in a tomb."

Luca didn’t flinch. He stood between me and the encroaching wall of heat, his massive frame a barrier against not just the fire, but the world. His skin was smeared with the blood of the hunters he had dismantled only moments ago, a macabre war paint that made him look less like a man and more like the primal entity the legends warned us about. He didn't look at me, but his hand found my forearm, his grip bruising, possessive, anchoring me to his side.

"Leave, Kael," Luca growled. The sound wasn't human; it vibrated in the floorboards, a guttural warning that made my own pulse race in a rhythm dictated by his dominance. "You are trespassing on ground that has already tasted your kind’s blood."

I clutched at the rough fabric of his shirt, my knuckles white. My lungs burned. Every instinct I had as a scientist screamed at me to run, to find the exit, but the wolf in me—the dormant, terrifying thing that had started to wake since I stepped into this territory—cried out for the protection of the Alpha. It was a humiliating dichotomy. I hated him for trapping me here, for the way he dictated my reality, yet in the face of Kael’s cold malice, Luca was the only gravity holding me to the earth.

Kael stepped closer, his boots crunching over splintered wood. "You’re weak, Luca. You’ve let your scent go soft. You’re rotting from the inside because of this little rabbit you’ve dragged into your den." He flicked his gaze toward me, and the predatory appraisal made my skin crawl. "She doesn't even know what she is, does she? She’s just a broken toy, waiting for someone to finish the job."

Luca surged forward, his movement so fast he was a blur of corded muscle. He slammed Kael against the wall that hadn't yet caught, the impact shaking the very foundation of the cabin. Luca’s hand went for Kael’s throat, fingers curling like steel hooks.

"She is mine," Luca hissed, his voice dropping to a low, lethal cadence that felt like a secret whispered against my skin. "And if your eyes linger on her for one second longer, I will tear them from your skull."

The cabin groaned. A beam collapsed nearby, sending a spray of sparks cascading toward us. The heat was becoming unbearable, the air thin and shimmering. I stumbled back, coughing, my senses reeling. Everything was too much—the scent of ash, the metallic tang of blood, the electric, suffocating aura of two apex predators squaring off in a burning cage.

Luca turned his head, his golden eyes finding mine through the swirling smoke. For a heartbeat, the violence dropped away, leaving behind a raw, jagged vulnerability. He reached out, his thumb brushing against my cheek with a startling, tender precision that contradicted the gore on his knuckles. It was a touch that demanded submission and promised salvation in the same breath.

"Stay behind me," he ordered, his voice thick with a strange, possessive desperation. "No matter what happens, do not leave my sight."

"Luca, we have to go!" I shouted, my voice cracking. "The whole structure is going to collapse!"

"Then we collapse with it," he replied, a chilling smile touching his lips. He wasn't afraid of dying. He was afraid of losing his grip on me.

Kael laughed, a wet, hacking sound, and suddenly he lunged. The air became a chaotic swirl of motion. I was shoved aside, hitting the floor hard as the two men collided in the center of the room. The fight was brutal, silent, and terrifyingly fast. They moved like shadows, claws tearing through clothes and skin, teeth bared in a primal display of territorial fury.

I scrambled backward, toward the back door, but the floor gave way. I fell, my arms flailing, sliding into the darkness of the cellar as the cabin roof groaned under the weight of the fire. Above me, the struggle continued, the thuds of bodies hitting the earth sounding like drumbeats of war.

"Beatrice!"

Luca’s voice tore through the roar of the flames, frantic and hollow. He wasn't fighting Kael anymore. He was scrambling toward the hole I had fallen through. Before he could reach me, the wall behind him buckled, showering the space in a cascade of burning debris.

I pulled myself up, desperate to see him, to make sure he was still standing, still mine to fear, still mine to hold. I looked up through the widening gap in the floorboards. The fire had turned the room into a furnace. Kael was gone, vanished into the smoke, but Luca was there, struggling against a fallen beam that pinned his leg.

His clothes were torn, his chest heaving with exertion, blood flowing from a deep gash on his shoulder. He looked at me, his face a mask of agony—not from the wound, but from the realization that he couldn't reach me.

I stood, my heart hammering against my ribs, and reached up to him. My fingers brushed his, a spark of contact that felt like a searing burn. He caught my hand, pulling it tight against his chest, his eyes locked onto mine with a intensity that felt like a final confession.

"I promised I would wait," he rasped, his breath hot against my palm. "Even if the world burns, I am the one who remains."

He pulled my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles with a bruised, desperate hunger that made my knees weaken. The heat in the room spiked, a wall of flame erupting between us as the last of the ceiling began to splinter and fall. In the reflection of his eyes, I saw not just the wolf, but the boy who had saved me in the woods all those years ago, his face twisted in a silent, agonizing plea for me to run, even as his fingers refused to let me go.

"Luca," I whispered, the name feeling like a prayer and a curse.

The floor above us disintegrated, and the last thing I felt before the world plunged into darkness was the crushing weight of his hand, refusing to let me fall alone.
