The Vampire's Borrowed Heart

Bölüm 11

[Chapter 11]

The air in the study felt heavy, viscous, like blood drying on a blade. I pressed my back against the mahogany bookshelves, the sharp spines of leather-bound volumes digging into my shoulder blades as if to anchor me to this reality. But nothing felt real. Not the antique fireplace crackling with blue-tinted flame, not the faint, metallic scent of ozone clinging to Aurelian’s coat, and certainly not the man himself—a predator standing in my sanctuary, blocking the only exit with a terrifying, fluid grace.

"The Court doesn't want me to 'heal' you," I whispered, my voice sounding thin and brittle to my own ears. "They wanted me opened up. They wanted my heart, didn't they?"

Aurelian took a step forward. He moved without sound, his shadow stretching long and jagged across the Persian rug. The silk of his waistcoat strained slightly over the tension in his shoulders—he was vibrating with a restrained violence that made the very air hum. He looked at me, his eyes dark, molten pools of obsidian that seemed to strip away the skin of my composure to see the frantic, rhythmic thrumming of my pulse beneath.

"They are gluttons for ancient relics, Maren," he said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that shivered down my spine. "They believe that because you are… *you*, your heart carries a residual frequency of the old world. A harvest of myth. They are mistaken, of course. Your heart belongs to no one but you, and it remains firmly encased within your ribs where I intend to keep it."

"You speak as if I’m an artifact to be cataloged," I spat, my hands curling into tight, trembling fists. "I am not a possession, Aurelian. I am not a surgical specimen, and I am certainly not whatever ghost you’ve been chasing for three hundred years."

"Aren't you?"

He was suddenly there, invading my space so abruptly I barely had time to gasp. He placed one hand on the wall beside my head, his fingers splayed, trapping me in the cage of his body. He smelled of cold stone, sandalwood, and something darker—something like the taste of copper.

His eyes scanned my face, tracing the line of my jaw, the frantic pulse at my throat. He didn't touch me, but the sheer proximity felt like a physical weight, a heat that made my skin prickle.

"You fear me," he murmured, leaning closer until his lips were a mere breath away from my ear. "You fear the way your body betrays you. You fear that, deep down, you recognize this room. You recognize the way I hold you. You fight, Maren, because it is in your nature to be resilient, but you are a bird beating its wings against a cage of its own making."

"I hate you," I breathed, though the words lacked the conviction I intended. My traitorous body leaned into him, drawn by the magnetism of his presence, by the sheer, terrifying gravity of his devotion.

Aurelian let out a jagged, humorless laugh. He shifted, his other hand coming up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were cool, calloused, and they lingered there, tracing the shell of my ear with a deliberate, agonizing slowness. Every place he touched turned to liquid fire.

"Hate me all you wish," he whispered, his eyes dipping to my mouth, then back to my eyes. "Hatred is passionate. It is a start. It is far better than the indifference you show the world. Keep hating me, if it keeps you looking at me."

He pressed closer, his chest brushing against mine. The physical power imbalance was stark; he was stone and ancient magic, and I was fragile, mortal, and utterly out of my depth. He leaned down, his forehead resting against mine. The contact was electric, a sudden, blinding rush of images—a garden in the rain, the smell of jasmine, a voice calling a name I couldn't quite remember.

My breath hitched. "Stop it," I whimpered. "Don't use… whatever this is. Don't manipulate what I’m feeling."

"I am not manipulating you, Maren. I am only reflecting what you refuse to acknowledge."

He tilted his head, his nose brushing against my cheek, then tracking down to the sensitive cord of my neck. I shivered, a sob catching in my throat as he inhaled, his lips grazing my pulse point. He wasn't biting, not yet, but the intent was clear, the hunger contained beneath a veneer of exquisite, tortured control. He was claiming me without breaking the skin, marking me with the scent of his own darkness.

"I could leave," I whispered, though we both knew it was a lie. Even if the doors were unlocked, the world outside was a graveyard waiting to claim me. I was bound to him by the very nature of the danger he had drawn me into.

"You won't," he murmured against my skin, his hand sliding down to the small of my back, pulling me flush against his hips. The pressure was firm, possessive, a silent declaration of ownership that sent a spike of pure, unadulterated adrenaline through me. "You are mine, and I am yours, in this life and the dozen that preceded it. The Court is coming for us, Maren. They are circling the house, scenting your blood, scenting the change in you. And the only thing between you and their hunger is me."

He pulled back just enough to look me in the eye. His expression was no longer the detached, arrogant aristocrat; it was raw, exposed, a look of profound, aching vulnerability that stunned me into silence. He looked tired. He looked like a man who had held his breath for three centuries, waiting for the moment he could finally exhale.

"I need you to trust me," he said, his voice cracking ever so slightly. "Not as your captor. But as the only thing standing between you and the void."

He leaned in, his mouth hovering inches from mine. I could feel the heat radiating from him, the sheer intensity of his focus. My heartbeat was erratic, hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a chaotic song of fear and awakening desire. I should have shoved him away. I should have screamed. Instead, I found myself tilting my head back, my eyes fluttering shut, surrendering to the pull.

He didn't hesitate. He captured my lips in a kiss that was neither gentle nor patient. It was a collision, an assertion, a demand. It tasted of ancient secrets and absolute, suffocating possession. My hands rose, reflexively bunching into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer as the world outside the study ceased to exist.

Suddenly, he pulled back, his eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp clarity. He looked toward the heavy curtains covering the tall windows.

"They’re here," he growled, his voice shifting instantly from lover to guardian.

A window pane shattered. Not from the outside in, but from the pressure of something unseen, something ancient and cold, flooding the room. A whisper crawled through the vents, cold as ice, and then a name was spoken—a name I had only ever heard in my darkest, most fevered nightmares.

"Aurelian," the voice hissed from the shadows of the ceiling. "We have come to collect the heart you stole from us."
