1 Year of Peace. Salem, Oregon. The Authors’ House.
The table was always in the middle now.
8 chairs. Never empty.
Chair 1: Umi - writes
Chair 2: Miri - plays piano
Chair 3: Alex - guitar
Chair 4: Fritz - photos
Chair 5: The Writer - empty, but the Pen sits there
Chair 6: The Musician - empty, but the Violin String hums sometimes
Chair 7: The Photographer - empty, but the Cracked Lens watches
Chair 8: Lila - draws with crayons
Every night at 11:11, the book opened by itself.
And they had to write.
Not for The Hunger.
For the 12 people whose grief they carried.
Week 1:
Umi wrote: For the writer who lost her mom.
Miri sang: We kept your songs alive.
Alex played: We played them loud.
Fritz printed: We put your photos on the wall.
The Pen warmed. The String stopped hurting.
The Lens showed them smiling instead of crying.
Month 3:
Visitors started coming.
Elias, Noah, Theo. They called it "story night".
8 chairs. Always someone new.
The table grew bigger on its own.
Month 6:
Lila named the chairs.
"Bu Teyze Kalemli. Bu Amca Kemanlı. Bu Abla Fotoğraflı."
She talked to them. And sometimes... they answered.
Through the book.
Thank you for remembering us.
Month 11:
The house didn’t feel haunted anymore.
It felt full.
Day 364. 10:59 PM.
Everyone at the table. Pizza. Laughter.
The book was quiet.
Fritz: "Tomorrow is day 365. He’s coming back."
Miri: "Let him come. This isn’t his table anymore."
Alex: "This is a garden now."
Umi: touched the table. It was warm.
The book flipped to a new page:
_Season 8: The Garden - Almost Complete
The Hunger returns in 1 minute.
But the table is no longer hungry.
It is fed._
11:00 PM.
knock knock
From under the house.
But this time... the table didn’t shake.
It glowed.
Umi: standing up "Welcome back."
