Secrets at the Barrel of a Gun

The cold barrel of the gun danced against the back of my neck, and Arda’s voice, trembling with fury, cut through the silence: "Who sent you here?". My throat was completely parched; I tried to form an answer, but the words refused to spill from my lips. The dark silhouette standing behind Arda slowly approached, and the realization of how severely things had spiraled out of control hit me. I was completely alone in the very center of hell.

"Speak, Lara! Or have you swallowed your tongue?" Arda’s voice was as cold as ice. The darkness in his eyes fed the terror growing inside me. I shouldn't have gone this far to avenge my sister. I was pregnant, and now both my life and the life of my unborn child were in grave danger.

"No one sent me," I managed to whisper with great difficulty. "I was just... curious".

Arda let out a mocking laugh. "Curious? You and curiosity? Unbelievable". Without pulling the gun away from my neck, he turned me to face him, our eyes locking together. What I saw in his gaze was not just rage, but a profound, haunting pain, as if he too were running from something.

"You’re lying," he whispered. "I can read it in your eyes".

"I’m telling the truth," I insisted, the panic growing inside me causing my heart to race violently. "I just... wanted to learn more about my sister".

Arda paused for a moment, his gaze softening slightly before hardening again into stone. "Your sister? Why have you suddenly become so curious now, after her death?".

"Because..." My lips trembled. "Because her death affected me deeply. I want to know. What happened, why it happened...".

The shadow behind Arda took another step closer. "Arda, I have a problem to handle," a thick, mechanical voice announced. Arda cast a brief glance at me before turning to the man behind him. "Stay here," he ordered. Then he turned back to me. "We will talk later, Lara. And when we do, you will tell me all the truths".

As Arda and the man left the warehouse, I collapsed right where I stood. My legs were trembling uncontrollably, and I struggled to breathe. I had just come face-to-face with death, and what was worse, I had only amplified Arda’s suspicions.

When I finally got into my rental car, my hands were shaking violently. I turned the ignition and stepped on the gas, checking the rearview mirror for the warehouse as I sped away. No one was there, but a terrible feeling gnawed at my insides; it felt as though an invisible hand was following me.

Upon arriving home, I threw myself onto the bed. As tears streamed down my cheeks, I thought of my sister. I realized just how much danger I had put myself in while trying to seek her revenge. I was pregnant, and this fact made everything infinitely more complicated. My hand drifted to my stomach. I was carrying a tiny life—Arda’s baby... The thought filled me with both fragile hope and agonizing pain. I had to protect this child, no matter the cost.

My phone rang, displaying an unknown number on the screen. I answered it hesitantly.

"Is this Lara Demir?" a voice asked.

"Yes, it's me," I replied.

"Listen to me carefully. Arda Yalçın is a dangerous man. Stay away from him".

"Who are you?" I asked in a panic.

"It doesn't matter. What matters is that you and your baby remain safe. Arda has dark secrets. And if you attempt to dig them up, the consequences could be very severe".

The call ended. I was left in a state of sheer bewilderment. Who was this man? What were Arda's secrets? And most importantly, how were my baby and I going to stay safe?. As these questions ate away at my mind, I remembered my sister's letter. Perhaps the answers were hidden in those pages. But would the truths put me in an even more dangerous position?

Taking a deep breath, I began to search for the letter. I scoured my bag, my pockets, tearing everything apart, but the letter was gone. It was lost. At that moment, my heart felt like it would be ripped from my chest. If the letter was gone, it meant only one thing: Arda had found it before me. And now, the real game was beginning.
