Neon Sins

Bölüm 3

Trauma Bond

The rain in Sector 4 didn’t wash things clean; it merely turned the neon grime into a slick, iridescent oil. Zara huddled beneath the rusted overhang of a deactivated cargo bay, her breath hitching in the damp, freezing air. Every shadow looked like an Enforcer’s visor, and every distant hum of a patrol drone felt like a death knell against her skull.

Beside her, Kai was a statue of coiled, dangerous kinetic energy. He had shed his formal command jacket, leaving him in a charcoal compression shirt that clung to his broad shoulders, highlighting the rigid line of his spine. He was staring out into the labyrinthine alleys of the lower city, his jaw tight enough to snap glass.

"They're tracking the bio-signature, aren't they?" Zara whispered, her voice barely audible over the relentless hiss of the downpour.

Kai didn't turn. His profile was sharp, carved from obsidian and indifference, yet there was a tremor in his hand as he hovered it near the holstered pulse pistol at his hip. "They aren't just tracking the signature, Zara. They’re hunting the glitch. You saw the data on that drive. To them, I stopped being a Commander the moment I realized I was a prototype."

Zara shifted, the movement drawing his gaze. The atmosphere between them shifted instantly, thickening with a static charge that had nothing to do with the city’s failing power grid. His eyes—a piercing, unnatural grey—locked onto hers, stripping away the layers of her bravado. She felt exposed, not just by the hunt, but by the way he looked at her: as if she were a puzzle he desperately wanted to solve, even if the pieces cut him.

"You're shaking," he murmured. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated in her chest.

"It’s cold," she lied.

He closed the distance between them in two fluid strides. He didn't touch her, but his presence invaded her space, bringing with it the scent of ozone, rain, and the faint, metallic tang of gunpowder. He loomed over her, bracing an arm against the rusted corrugated metal wall behind her head. The proximity was suffocating. She could see the faint, glowing synaptic port at the base of his neck—the mark of the Hegemony’s 'perfect' soldier—pulsing with a soft, rhythmic indigo light.

"You’re lying," he countered, his gaze dropping to her throat, where her pulse was betraying her with a frantic flutter. "You’re afraid. Not of the Enforcers. You’re afraid of what happens if we actually look at the rest of that drive."

"What if I'm afraid of you?" she breathed, the words escaping before she could filter them.

A dark, jagged smirk flickered across his face—a look that held more hunger than kindness. He leaned in closer, his shadow engulfing her. "You should be. I was programmed for precision, Zara. My entire existence was a series of tactical commands. But you..." He paused, his hand lifting, fingers hovering just millimeters from her jawline. "You make me want to violate every protocol I have left."

The air in the alley seemed to vanish. Zara felt a treacherous heat bloom in her gut, a terrifying desire to close those last few millimeters. His intensity was a physical weight, pinning her to the wall more effectively than any restraint. He was a man who had been taught that emotions were flaws, and yet, he was looking at her with a raw, predatory longing that felt like a jagged blade pressed against her skin.

"We shouldn't be here," she whispered, though she made no move to escape.

"We don't have a choice," he replied, his voice dropping to a seductive, dangerous register. "The city is a cage, and the keys are in your pocket. If we stay, we die. If we move, we die. Might as well spend the remaining time doing exactly what we want."

He leaned closer, his nose brushing against her temple. His skin was unnaturally cool, but the contact ignited a wildfire under her skin. Zara’s hands trembled as she reached out, her fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. He was solid, unyielding, and utterly forbidden. The contrast between his lethal reputation and the sudden, searing heat of his breath against her skin was enough to make her senses fray.

Suddenly, a high-pitched whine pierced the air—a sound so sharp it made Zara cry out.

Kai straightened instantly, his predatory mask snapping back into place. He whipped his head toward the end of the alley. A flicker of white light danced across the wet pavement, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of pressurized boots.

"The perimeter is breached," Kai hissed, his hand flying to his weapon. He looked back at her, his expression a chaotic swirl of tactical detachment and a lingering, dark possessiveness. "Stay behind me. If they get too close, do not hesitate. You trigger the drive’s localized pulse. It will fry their neural links, but it will knock us both unconscious for minutes. It’s a suicide move, Zara."

"And what's the alternative?" she shouted over the rising wail of sirens.

"The alternative," Kai said, grabbing her hand and pulling her into the labyrinthine shadows of the slums, "is that I make sure they never touch you."

They plunged into the darkness, the neon lights bleeding into streaks of violent purple and toxic green. As they sprinted through the industrial ruins, Zara felt the weight of the drive against her ribs—a ticking time bomb. But it wasn't the data that kept her heart racing; it was the iron grip Kai held on her hand, a lifeline that felt more like a shackle.

They reached a dead end—a massive, reinforced blast door that led to the subterranean ventilation shafts. Kai slammed his hand against the scanner, but it sputtered, flashing a violent, systemic red.

"Denied," the computer voice droned coldly.

Kai roared, kicking the door with enough force to dent the alloy. Behind them, the shadows began to glow with the blinding, clinical white of Enforcer flashlights. The chase was over. They were trapped.

Kai spun around, drawing his pistol, but he stepped directly in front of her, shielding her entire body with his own. He pressed his back against hers, his breath coming in ragged, heated gasps.

"Zara," he growled, his voice barely audible under the crunch of boots closing in. "The drive. If I go down, you run. Don't look back."

"I'm not leaving you," she screamed.

He turned his head, his face inches from hers in the dark. In the flicker of a distant neon sign, his eyes looked like molten iron. "You're already mine, Zara. If I fall, you take the secret and you burn this city to the ground. That’s the only way we survive."

The first Enforcer stepped into the alley, raising a rifle. Kai didn't wait. He vaulted over a stack of crates, screaming a challenge that echoed through the sector, as the world exploded into white noise.
