Chapter 4

The rich, earthy aroma of truffle oil and aged oak filled the air of The Vine & Twig restaurant, a hushed counterpoint to the boisterous chatter that erupted around the long, polished walnut table. Overhead, wrought-iron chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow, their light dancing across Scarlett’s beaming face. She was in her element, recounting vineyard anecdotes, her laughter bright and carefree, utterly oblivious to the silent earthquake trembling beneath Audrey’s seat.

Audrey picked at a sliver of roasted duck, the texture like ash in her mouth. The residual heat from Zane’s hand, a ghost on her palm from their brush in the cellar, still thrummed beneath her skin. Every instinct screamed at her to create distance, to bury herself in the mundane conversation of her parents dissecting regional Pinot Noir vintages. But Zane was seated directly opposite her, a constant, magnetic pull across the expanse of linen and crystal.

He wasn't engaging much in the jovial pre-wedding chatter, his gaze often drifting, contemplative. Sometimes, she’d catch his eyes – a flash of something unreadable, intense, that made her breath hitch. Then he’d quickly divert, perhaps to Scarlett, or to the flickering candlelight, and Audrey would feel a pang of foolishness, a flush of shame for even imagining what she thought she saw there. But the electric current that had arced between them in the cellar lingered, a phantom limb that only she seemed to feel.

“Darling, you’re so quiet tonight,” her mother, Eleanor, chirped, her voice cutting through Audrey’s internal monologue. “Did the wine tasting wear you out?”

Audrey managed a weak smile. “Just enjoying the atmosphere, Mom.”

Scarlett, ever the attentive bride-to-be, leaned across the table, her smile sweet. “Oh, leave her be, Mum. Audrey gets shy around all this wedding talk. Don’t worry, sis, you’ll find your Prince Charming eventually. Just keep kissing those frogs!” She punctuated this with a wink at Zane, who offered a small, polite smile in return, but his eyes, for a fleeting second, met Audrey’s. In that instant, a quiet storm brewed, a shared understanding of Scarlett’s casual slight, a momentary alliance against it that both thrilled and terrified Audrey.

“Perhaps Audrey’s just a discerning individual, Scarlett,” Zane said softly, his voice a low rumble that cut through the clatter of cutlery. He didn’t elaborate, but the words felt like a lifeline to Audrey, a subtle validation that made her chest ache with a gratitude she dared not show.

Scarlett merely shrugged, accepting the mild rebuke with good humor. “Well, I know I’m not as discerning as Zane, am I? He’s such a stickler for details. You should see his notebooks, Audrey. Full of sketches and notes, barely legible sometimes.” She gestured playfully in Zane’s direction. “So old-fashioned, always writing things down instead of just using his phone.”

Audrey’s gaze snapped to Zane. He stiffened imperceptibly, his hand unconsciously hovering near the inner pocket of his jacket. The ‘A’. The single, stylized 'A' embossed on that worn leather cover. Scarlett’s offhand comment, meant to be endearing, instead amplified the mystery, making the notebook feel like a hidden relic, a secret language between Zane and his past.

The conversation shifted to honeymoon plans, then guest lists, a relentless march toward a future that felt increasingly wrong. Audrey found herself nodding, smiling, her entire being a finely tuned instrument absorbing every nuance of Zane’s presence. The way his long fingers absently traced the rim of his wine glass, the slight furrow in his brow when her father made a particularly loud joke, the almost imperceptible tilt of his head when he listened to Scarlett.

At one point, a bread basket was passed around, and as Audrey reached for a sourdough slice, Zane’s hand, warm and strong, grazed hers. It was accidental, fleeting, yet it sent a jolt through her, a familiar current that grounded her for a split second before her hand recoiled as if burned. She risked a glance at him. His eyes, dark and heavy, were already on hers, a silent apology or perhaps something deeper, a mirror reflecting the spark she felt. The air thickened around them, charged with unspoken words, an invisible tether drawing them tighter.

Later, as the dessert course of lavender panna cotta and berry compote was served, Zane excused himself to make a quick call, something about confirming a delivery for the wedding florist. As he stood, his phone already to his ear, he paused by the table, exchanging a brief word with Scarlett. He pulled something from his inner jacket pocket, a small, dark rectangular object, and quickly scribbled a note on it before returning it to his pocket. It was a swift, almost unnoticed movement, but Audrey saw it. The same worn leather, the same subtle sheen. And for a heart-stopping moment, before it disappeared, she swore she saw it again: the distinct, elegant curve of the 'A', catching the chandelier light.

Her chest tightened. *Why did Scarlett dismiss it so easily? Had she never looked closely? Or did she know, and simply choose not to care?*

The rich sweetness of the panna cotta turned cloying in her mouth. She needed air. As soon as Zane’s back disappeared around the corner, Audrey muttered an excuse about needing the ladies’ room and pushed back her chair.

The corridor outside was quieter, softly lit, providing a welcome reprieve from the insistent cheer of the dining room. Audrey leaned against a cool stone pillar, closing her eyes, trying to recalibrate her racing heart. This was madness. Utter, complete, unforgivable madness. He was Scarlett’s fiancé. Her sister’s. But the memory of his eyes, his touch, the tantalizing mystery of that ‘A’, were threads weaving a dangerous tapestry around her resolve.

A soft cough broke her solitude. Her eyes snapped open. Zane stood a few feet away, his phone no longer in his hand. He hadn’t gone to confirm a florist delivery; he’d simply come out here. For her? The thought was a dangerous whisper.

“Are you alright, Audrey?” he asked, his voice low, a velvet caress in the quiet hallway. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a vulnerability she hadn’t seen before.

She swallowed, trying to find her voice. “I… yes. Just a little overwhelmed.”

He took a slow step closer, then another, until he was just a breath away. The air crackled between them, thick with an unspoken history that had only begun hours ago. She could smell the subtle scent of him—woodsmoke and something uniquely masculine, warm and comforting. Her gaze involuntarily dropped to his inner jacket pocket, where the notebook lay hidden.

“I noticed,” he murmured, his eyes searching hers, “Scarlett’s comments… they can be a lot sometimes.”

“She means well,” Audrey said, but it felt hollow, a flimsy shield against the raw honesty of his proximity.

He didn't respond immediately, just studied her face, his gaze lingering on her lips for a fraction of a second too long. His hand lifted, almost imperceptibly, as if to reach out, to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. Audrey held her breath, every nerve ending screaming.

Then, his hand dropped, and his eyes flickered, the vulnerability replaced by a familiar mask of controlled calm. He cleared his throat. “About the notebook earlier,” he began, his voice barely audible, “the ‘A’… it’s a long story. It belonged to someone… very important to me.”

Audrey’s heart hammered. This was it. The confession. The crack in the facade. She waited, desperate, afraid.

Zane’s gaze was fixed on hers, intense, almost pleading. He took another half-step, closing the remaining distance. His voice dropped to an urgent whisper, “Before Scarlett, there was someone else. Someone I thought… I thought I’d lost forever.”
