Episode 8: Wake Up

Darkness had weight in Ward C.

The ticking was inside Elias’s head now. Backwards. 3:17. 3:16. 3:15. Each click pulled something loose. A face. A hallway. The smell of copper and bleach.

“Flashlight,” Elias said. His voice didn’t sound like his own.

Olivia fumbled, clicked it on. The beam shook across the room, landing on the bed. On the restraints. On the photograph in the open watch.

Two boys. Hospital gowns. His face, but younger. Hollow-eyed. Smiling because someone told him to.

Adrian was gone. The doorway was empty. But his voice remained, seeping from the walls.

“Do you feel it yet, Elias? The part of you that never left this room?”

Olivia stepped between him and the door. “Elias, look at me. Whatever he’s doing, it’s a trick. Mind games. That’s not you.”

“Isn’t it?” Elias touched the restraints. Leather, cracked with age. His wrists remembered them before his mind did. “Dr. Nathan Cole. Ward C. Patient 317. The dates line up. I was at university in 2009, but there are six months I can’t account for. A gap. Everyone said I took a leave of absence. Travel. Europe.”

He turned to her. “What if I didn’t travel? What if I was here?”

The lights slammed back on. Every bulb at once. The sudden brightness was surgical.

And the walls were different.

The hundreds of compasses were gone. In their place: maps. London. Drawn in red ink. Each one marked with a symbol. Warehouse. Observatory. Hospital. Spitalfields. A line connecting them. A route. And at the center, a circle around Ward C.

His route. Their route. He’d walked it already.

Adrian’s voice came from the corner now. He sat in the chair, legs crossed, as if he’d been there the whole time. Watching.

“Nathan called it radical memory therapy,” Adrian said. “Erase the trauma by erasing the man. Build him again from nothing. Clean slate. Clean detective.” He tilted his head. “It worked. You became brilliant. Obsessed with patterns. With justice. You just forgot why.”

Elias pulled his gun. His hand was steady. His breathing wasn’t. “Why bring me back?”

“Because you asked me to,” Adrian said softly. “Before Nathan took you. You made me promise. If you ever forgot who you were… if you ever forgot us… I had to lead you home.” He stood. “The murders were never the point, Elias. They were breadcrumbs. For you.”

Olivia raised her weapon too. “Step back. Now.”

Adrian didn’t look at her. He only looked at Elias. “You remember the door, don’t you? The one Nathan made us choose? Two patients. One release. One stays.”

The ticking stopped.

Silence rushed in. And with it, the memory. Whole. Violent.

Nathan’s office. Two chairs. Two keys. His hand and Adrian’s hand, hovering. “Only one of you can leave, boys. The other stays and forgets. Choose.”

He had taken the key. Adrian had smiled and let him. “Find your true north, Elias.”

Then the needle. The darkness. The new life.

Elias staggered. The gun dropped from his hand.

“It was me,” he whispered. “I left you here.”

“No,” Adrian said. He walked forward, knelt, picked up the gun. He didn’t point it at Elias. He placed it in Elias’s palm and closed his fingers around it. “You saved me. Because Nathan would have broken us both. You got out. You became someone who could stop him. I stayed so I could remember for both of us.”

The door to Room 317 opened on its own.

In the hallway stood a third man. Older. Thinner. But the name tag was still there, pinned to a lab coat he hadn’t worn in seventeen years.

Dr. Nathan Cole.

He smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes. “Patient 317. You’re awake. Finally.”

Adrian didn’t turn. “Step 6, Elias.”

Nathan stepped into the room. “You were always my best work. The perfect detective. The one who couldn’t be corrupted, because he couldn’t remember what broke him.” He looked at Adrian. “And you, 318. Still playing games.”

Elias looked at the gun. At Adrian. At Nathan. At the maps on the wall. The compass that never pointed north.

And he remembered everything.

Step 6: Wake up.

He raised the gun. But he didn’t point it at Nathan.

He pointed it at himself.

“Elias, no!” Olivia screamed.

Adrian didn’t move. “Your choice,” he said quietly. “Same as it was seventeen years ago.”

Elias’s finger tightened on the trigger. The room held its breath.

Then he lowered the gun an inch and pulled.

The bullet shattered the mirror on the wall.

Glass rained down. And behind it, carved into the brick for seventeen years, waiting: another door.

Step 7: Walk through.

Elias met Adrian’s eyes. And for the first time, he smiled too.

“Let’s finish this,” he said.

Nathan’s smile finally died.

Somewhere in Spitalfields, the building began to groan. As if it, too, was waking up.
