Episode 5: The Door That Shouldn’t Exist

The door on the hospital wall wasn’t there when Elias blinked.

He ran his fingers over the paint. Cold. Smooth. No outline, no seam. Only red ink, drying in the shape of an arch. And under it, Step 4 stared back at him like a dare.

Olivia pulled out her phone, snapping photos. “The paint’s fresh. Still wet. But the wall behind it is solid brick. No hidden room. No maintenance shaft.”

“Then how did he draw it?” Elias asked.

“From the other side,” she said quietly.

The lights flickered again. This time the vitals monitor didn’t just flatline. It counted down. 10. 9. 8.

Elias didn’t wait. He pulled his gun and fired once at the center of the drawn door.

The sound was deafening in the small room. Plaster cracked. Brick dust fell. But the door didn’t open. It answered. A sound came from behind the wall. Not an echo. A click. Like a lock turning.

Then silence.

---

Scotland Yard, one hour later.

Margaret spread photos across the table. Greenwich. The hospital. The warehouse. All connected by red lines she’d drawn herself. All converging on one point in East London.

“Spitalfields,” she said. “Abandoned psychiatric ward. Closed in 1987 after ‘experimental treatments’. Officially sealed. Unofficially… forgotten.”

Elias stared at the map. Adrian’s atlas, circled in red. The same point.

“He’s not leaving clues,” Elias said. “He’s leaving us a route.”

Olivia looked up from the hospital photo. “The door he drew. I ran it through architecture archives. It’s not a hospital door. It’s a ward door. From Spitalfields. The old asylum.”

Elias stood. “Then Step 4 isn’t about finding a door. It’s about walking through one.”

---

Spitalfields at dusk. Fog rolled between the broken buildings like breath.

The ward was exactly as Margaret said. Sealed. Condemned. A padlock rusted shut on the main entrance. But beside it, freshly painted in red, another door. Perfect. Unweathered. The same arch, the same handle, the same Step 4 underneath.

It hadn’t been here yesterday.

Elias placed his hand on the brass knob. Cold. Real.

“Adrian’s not inside,” Olivia whispered. “He’s waiting for us to go in.”

“I know,” Elias said. He turned the knob.

The door opened without a sound.

Inside: darkness. And the faint smell of antiseptic. And a hallway stretching further than the building should allow. Lined with patient rooms. All the doors closed. All except one, at the far end. Light spilled from under it.

On the floor, leading from Elias’s feet to that last door, a trail of red ink. Footsteps. Small. Deliberate. As if someone had walked this path moments before.

A voice drifted down the hall. Adrian’s voice. But softer now. Almost sad.

“You made it, Detective. Most people stop at the fog. You kept walking. That’s why I chose you.”

Elias stepped forward. Olivia followed, flashlight trembling.

“Adrian!” Elias called. “This ends now.”

“No,” Adrian replied from the darkness. “This is where it begins. Step 5. The truth.”

The last door creaked open on its own.

Inside, no patient. No bed. Only a chair. The same chair from the warehouse. And on it, a mirror.

Elias approached slowly. He looked into the glass.

He didn’t see himself.

He saw Adrian. Sitting in a chair just like it, in a room just like this, years ago. Wearing a patient’s gown. Eyes empty. A brass compass on his lap. The needle spinning wildly.

Behind Adrian in the mirror, a doctor stood with a clipboard. The name tag read: Dr. Nathan Cole.

The mirror rippled like water. Adrian in the glass turned his head and looked directly at Elias.

“Welcome home, Elias,” he whispered.

The lights went out.

When they came back on, the chair was empty. But the mirror remained. And scrawled across it in red ink: Step 5: Remember.

Outside, the fog swallowed Spitalfields whole. And somewhere in the dark, Adrian smiled.

Because the door that shouldn’t exist… had finally been opened.
