Episode 18: South

Patient 348 didn’t hide.

She left bodies like breadcrumbs. Each one a little closer to home. Each compass carved deeper, angrier, more precise. She wasn’t killing. She was calling.

The last body was in Hackney. Three streets from the red door. Detective Inspector Alan Price. Vice Unit. Retired. Nathan’s list had him marked as INFORMANT. COMPROMISED. 2007.

She left him in his kitchen. Compass on his chest. And on the wall, in his blood, one word: FOUND YOU.

North saw it first. He’d been walking the perimeter every night since he took the name. He didn’t sleep much. None of them did. Too many years stolen to waste on dreams.

“She knows we’re here,” North said. He didn’t look scared. He looked ready. “She’s been watching.”

Elias knelt by the body. Price had been dirty. Price had sold girls to Hale. Price had been on Nathan’s payroll. Price was also 63 and had a granddaughter and a cat that was still hiding under the table.

“This isn’t justice,” Elias said. “This is Nathan. This is what he made me do. What he made us do. Without the memory. Without the choice.”

“Then we give her the choice,” Adrian said. He was behind Elias, gun low, eyes on the windows. The whole house was awake now. 40 people in the living room, waiting. Maya had 339’s hand. He was awake today. Mostly. He didn’t talk, but he watched. And he didn’t scream anymore.

The front door was open. Always, now. No locks. No secrets.

She walked in at 3:14 AM.

19 years old. Green eyes. Black hair. Compass scar on her wrist, fresh, picked at. She wore a hoodie that was too big and carried a knife that was too small. She looked like Claire. She looked like every ghost Elias had ever buried.

She stopped in the hallway. Looked at the 40 people staring at her. Looked at Elias. At the cassette in his hand. At the photo of her in his other hand.

“Patient 317,” she said. Her voice was young. Broken. Proud. “I finished your work. I found them. I pointed them south. Like you taught me.”

“I didn’t teach you,” Elias said. He set the photo down. The cassette down. Stepped forward, hands empty. “Nathan did. And he lied. To both of us.”

Her knife came up. Not at him. At herself. Pressed to her scar. “Failsafe,” she whispered. “If 317 is compromised, 348 completes the mission. If 317 is awake, 348 absolves.”

“Absolves who?” North asked, moving slow, flanking her. Not threatening. Protecting.

“Me,” she said. “Him. All of you. I finish the list. Then I sleep. For good. That’s the word. Absolve. That’s what north means.”

Elias was close now. Three feet. Close enough to see the kid in her. The same kid he’d been at 21. Angry. Hurt. Certain.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

She blinked. The knife wavered. “I’m… 348.”

“No,” Elias said. “Nathan gave you that. What did your mother call you?”

A beat. Two. Then, small: “Hope.”

Hope. God. Nathan had a sense of humor. Or cruelty. Or both.

“Hope,” Elias said. “I’m Elias. This is Adrian. North. Maya. Caleb. Sofia. James.” He pointed. Each name, a light. Each name, a choice. “We were 317 through 347. And we’re awake. We’re not Nathan’s anymore.”

“I saw the bodies,” Hope said. “I saw what you did to Hale. The compass. You started this. You made the map.”

“I did,” Elias said. “When I was broken. When I was alone. When Nathan told me it was the only way. But it’s not.”

He took another step. The knife was at his chest now. He didn’t stop.

“You killed five men, Hope. Men who deserved it, maybe. Men the law couldn’t touch. I get it. I lived it. But after the fifth, did it feel better? Did the compass stop spinning? Did Claire come back?”

Her face crumpled. “Who’s Claire?”

“My sister,” Elias said. “Hale sold her. Three times. The system let him walk three times. So I stopped him. I carved a compass in his chest because I wanted him to know he’d been found. Just like you.” He touched his own chest. Over his heart. “It didn’t bring her back. It didn’t make me clean. It just made me his.”

Hope was crying now. The knife shaking. “Then what do I do? If I don’t finish the list, if I don’t absolve, then what was I for?”

Adrian answered. He was beside Elias now. Always beside him. “You get to decide that. Today. Right now. Not Nathan. Not 317. You.”

339 made a sound upstairs. Not a scream. A word. His first word in weeks. He was at the top of the stairs, Maya holding him up. He looked at Hope. At the knife. At the 39 people who had been where she was.

“Home,” 339 said. Clear. Certain. Then he smiled. Broken. Real.

Hope stared at him. At the word. At the house full of numbers who had become names.

The knife dropped. It hit the floor, not with a clatter, but a sigh.

“I don’t… I don’t know how to be awake,” she whispered.

North picked up the knife. Set it on the table. Not as a weapon. As history. “None of us did,” he said. “We’re learning. Together.”

Elias held out his hand. Not to lead her. To meet her. “Step 16 was the last compass, Hope. Step 17 is you.”

She looked at his hand. At the blood still under his nails from Ward A. From choosing. From pointing north when Nathan told him south.

She took it.

And in the hallway of a burned house in Hackney, Patient 348 became Hope Vance. Number 41. The last one. The one who chose.

Upstairs, 339 laughed. For the first time. It sounded like a beginning.

Outside, London kept turning. But inside, the compasses had stopped spinning.

They were home.
