Episode 12: The 41

41 names. 41 compasses. 41 lives Nathan Cole rebuilt and pointed.

Margaret spread the list across the table in her office. No more sub-levels. No more secrets. Daylight through the blinds cut the paper into bars.

“All released between 2005 and 2016,” she said. “All violent histories. All ‘rehabilitated’ through Ward C. All placed in positions of trust after.”

Elias ran his finger down the page. He stopped at number 19. Dr. Sarah Kline. Forensic Pathologist. Central London.

“I know her,” he said. “She worked three of my cases last year. Best in the city. She—” He stopped. The memory wasn’t his. It was implanted. A name Nathan had made sure he trusted.

Olivia pointed at number 33. Detective Inspector Mark Reyes. Met Police. Organized Crime Unit. “He’s my superior. He signed off on the Spitalfields warrant. He knew where we were going.”

Adrian picked up the list. His hand was still bandaged, but steady. “He didn’t stop us. That means something.”

“It means we don’t know who’s awake and who’s still sleeping,” Elias said.

Margaret closed the file. “Which is why this doesn’t go through channels. Not yet. We vet them ourselves. One by one. Quietly. If Nathan built a network, we don’t know how deep it goes. Judges. Lawyers. Politicians. For all we know, the man who sentenced him was Patient 309.”

The room went cold.

“So we start with the ones we can reach,” Adrian said. He tapped number 19. “Sarah Kline. Forensics. She’ll have access to old cases. If Nathan falsified autopsies, she’d know.”

Elias nodded. “We bring her in. No badges. No warrants. Just a conversation.”

---

Central Morgue, 2:14 AM.

Dr. Sarah Kline didn’t look like a weapon. She looked tired. Lab coat, coffee in one hand, scalpel in the other. She was working late. She was always working late.

She didn’t startle when Elias stepped out of the shadows. She just looked at him, then at Adrian, then at the door. Calculating exits.

“Detective Vance,” she said. “You’re not supposed to be here. You’re on administrative leave pending psychiatric review.”

“The review’s over,” Elias said. “I remember everything now.”

Something flickered in her eyes. Recognition. Not of him. Of the words.

“‘Find your true north,’” she whispered. Then she blinked. Hard. Like she was waking up from a dream. She set the scalpel down. Slowly.

“Patient 319,” Adrian said. Not a question.

Sarah’s hand went to her temple. “I… I have gaps. Months. In 2011. I was in a car accident. Or… no. That’s not right. There was a fire. No. A… a ward.”

Olivia stepped forward, gun low but visible. “Dr. Kline. We’re not here to hurt you. We need to know if Nathan Cole got to you. If he put something in your head.”

Sarah laughed. It was a broken sound. “He put a lot of things in my head. Anatomy. Pathology. How to read a body like a map. How to tell if a death was clean.” Her eyes focused on Elias. “He told me to trust you. That if you ever came asking, I was supposed to give you this.”

She walked to her desk. Unlocked a drawer. Pulled out a key. Brass. Old. The same compass symbol.

“For what door?” Elias asked.

Sarah handed it to him. “Not a door. A locker. Evidence locker B-17. Central Precinct. He said you’d know when you needed it.”

Adrian took the key. “What’s in it?”

“I don’t know,” Sarah said. “I was never allowed to look. I was just… the keeper.” She looked at her hands. “God. I’ve been his keeper for thirteen years and I didn’t even know it.”

The lights in the morgue flickered. Once. Twice.

Then the door opened.

Detective Inspector Mark Reyes stood there. No backup. No coat. Just a gun in his hand, not raised. Not yet.

“Evening, 317,” Reyes said. “319. 318.” He looked at Olivia. “You weren’t on the list. That’s new.”

Elias stepped between Reyes and Sarah. “Mark. You don’t have to do this. Whatever Nathan told you, it’s over. He’s in custody.”

Reyes smiled. It was sad. “You think he was the only one? Nathan built the compasses, Elias. But someone had to wind them.”

He raised the gun. Not at Elias. At his own head.

“Failsafe protocol,” Reyes said. “If the network is compromised, we sleep. For good.”

“Mark, no!” Olivia shouted.

Reyes’s finger tightened. “Find your true—”

Adrian didn’t think. He moved. The same way he’d moved for Elias seventeen years ago. He hit Reyes low, knocking him sideways. The gun went off. The shot cracked through the morgue, buried itself in a steel cabinet.

Reyes hit the ground. Alive. Breathing. The gun skittered away. He stared at the ceiling, eyes wide. The phrase unfinished. The trigger broken.

“North,” Reyes whispered. Then he started to cry. “I don’t… I don’t know where north is. He never told me. He just told me to sleep.”

Sarah knelt beside him. Doctor, not weapon. “It’s okay. You’re okay. You’re awake now.”

Elias picked up the gun. Looked at the brass key in Adrian’s hand. Evidence locker B-17.

“41 names,” he said. “How many of them are like him, Adrian? How many are going to pull the trigger if we find them first?”

Adrian helped Reyes sit up. “Then we don’t find them,” he said. “We wake them.”

Outside, London was quiet. But under it, 40 more compasses were ticking. Some north. Some south. Some waiting for a phrase they’d never hear.

Elias put the key in his pocket.

“Step 10 isn’t remember everyone,” he said. “Step 10 is save everyone.”

He looked at Sarah. At Reyes. At Olivia. At Adrian.

“Let’s go open B-17.”
