As the flames licked the sky, the smoke filling Lale's lungs reminded her of hell. If it weren't for Rüzgar's tight grip on her hand, she would have been rooted to the spot in terror. "Run, Lale, run!" Rüzgar shouted, his voice lost in the howling wind.
As Lale ran breathlessly in panic, a single question kept swirling in her mind: Did they know? How had they found her? Was it possible to be exposed so quickly despite the Witness Protection Program? Or... was it Rüzgar? No, it couldn't be. Rüzgar was protecting her, wasn't he?
Rüzgar pulled Lale, directing her deeper into the forest. Stumbling between the trees, Lale's legs were trembling. "Rüzgar, stop!" she pleaded, "I can't breathe."
Rüzgar paused, his eyes gleaming in the darkness. "We don't have time to rest. They'll find us."
"But how? Who are these people?" Lale's voice came out shaky.
A dark expression appeared on Rüzgar's face. "It doesn't matter. I'll protect you. I promise."
Lale looked into his eyes. They were as deep and complex as the ocean. She wanted to believe him, but the worm of doubt inside her kept gnawing. "Why are you helping me, Rüzgar? Why are you risking your life?"
Rüzgar hesitated for a moment, as if weighing what he wanted to say. "I owe you a debt, Lale. I'm paying for something I did in the past."
Lale frowned. "What debt? What do you mean?"
"Not now. I'll tell you later. But know that I will do anything to protect you." Rüzgar's voice was resolute.
They moved through the forest all night. The moonlight filtered through the trees, guiding them. Lale didn't let go of Rüzgar's hand for a moment. His presence created a strange sense of security within her. But at the same time, Rüzgar's secrets unsettled her.
With the first light of morning, they stopped by a small stream. Rüzgar took Lale's face in his hands. "Stay here. I'll check around. If anyone approaches, don't make a sound."
Lale nodded and collapsed to the ground. As she watched Rüzgar walk away, the fear inside her grew even more. She was alone. She was vulnerable. And worst of all, she didn't know who to trust.
When Rüzgar returned, there was a worried expression on his face. "We have to get out of here. Our tracks have been found."
Lale stood up. "Where are we going?"
"To a safer place. But first, I need to show you something."
Rüzgar led Lale downstream. After a few minutes, they came to a small waterfall. The sound of the water broke the silence of the forest.
Rüzgar moved towards the rocks behind the waterfall. "Look here."
When Lale looked where Rüzgar was pointing, she couldn't believe her eyes. There was an inscription carved on the rocks: "To Lale, with my eternal love – Demir."
Lale gasped. Demir... It couldn't be. Demir was dead. Three years ago, in a car accident...
She tried to wipe away the tears flowing from her eyes. "This... this is impossible. Demir is dead."
Rüzgar's face darkened. "Do you think he's dead?"
"What do you mean?" Lale's voice was trembling.
Rüzgar approached Lale and whispered: "Demir is not dead, Lale. He's alive. And he's looking for you."
