Curse of the Boy King

Bölüm 6

[Chapter 6]

The air in the Duat tasted of ozone and ancient, suffocating decay. Clara’s lungs burned as the shadow-guardian’s grip tightened around her waist—a limb of solidified smoke, freezing and sharp as obsidian shards. She was lifted, her boots dangling inches above the shifting, charcoal-colored sands of the labyrinth floor.

Below her, Akhenaten stood, a silhouette of shattered grace. The golden ceremonial collar he wore shimmered, casting a sickly, bioluminescent glow against the absolute dark of the underworld. He didn't look like a king in that moment; he looked like a predator denied his kill.

"Drop her," he commanded. His voice wasn't human. It was a resonance that vibrated through the floorboards of reality, a rasping chorus of thousands of ghosts echoing his authority.

The shadow-guardian hissed—a sound like dry leaves skittering over tombstone marble—and tilted its head. It didn't release her. Instead, it pressed its cold, vaporous palm against Clara’s throat. She gasped, her vision tunneling, but through the haze, she saw Akhenaten move.

He moved with a fluidity that defied biology, a blur of linen and coiled muscle. He vaulted over a jagged outcropping of basalt, his hand finding the hilt of a blade that seemed to be forged from the very darkness they were breathing. With a snarl of exertion, he drove the blade into the guardian’s ethereal back.

The creature shrieked, a sound that tore at Clara’s sanity, and vanished into a cloud of stinking ash.

Clara plummeted. She didn't hit the hard ground. She hit him.

Akhenaten caught her, his arms corded and unyielding. The impact knocked the breath from them both, sending them sprawling into the sand. He hovered over her, his chest heaving, his dark, kohl-rimmed eyes scanning her face with a ferocity that bordered on violence.

"You fool," he breathed, his hand coming up to cup her jaw. His skin was unnaturally warm, a stark, feverish contrast to the frigid air of the Duat. "Do you have any concept of what exists in these shadows? You are a fragile thing, Clara. A blink of an eye in the span of an empire. You do not belong here."

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but it wasn't just adrenaline. It was the pull. The magnetic, agonizing tether that had snapped into place the moment they fell together. She reached up, her trembling fingers brushing the high, razor-sharp line of his cheekbone.

"I belong wherever you are," she whispered, her own voice sounding strange and breathless in the vast, empty dark.

His pupils dilated, swallowing the gold of his irises until they were nothing but bottomless pits of obsidian. He leaned in, his nose brushing hers. She could smell the scent of him—myrrh, frankincense, and the metallic tang of blood. It was intoxicating, a siren song of danger that made her want to surrender every secret she possessed.

"That is a dangerous admission, Scholar," he murmured, his thumb tracing her lower lip. The touch sent a jolt of raw, electric desire through her that left her arching toward him. "If you anchor yourself to me, you burn. I am a flame that consumes everything it touches. Do you truly want to be ash?"

"Better to burn with you," she challenged, her voice low and desperate, "than to rot in the world above."

He let out a jagged, hollow laugh, leaning his forehead against hers. The intensity of their proximity was suffocating. Every breath he took seemed to steal the air from her lungs, and she didn't care. She felt the heavy thrum of his pulse against her throat, a rhythmic, supernatural beat that mirrored her own. They were two jagged edges of a broken seal finally grinding together.

Suddenly, Akhenaten stiffened. His gaze shifted, darting toward the winding, endless corridors of the labyrinth.

"Someone approaches," he hissed, pulling away from her.

Clara scrambled to her feet, wiping the grime from her face. "Is it more guardians?"

"No," he said, standing slowly. His regal composure returned, though his eyes remained fixed on the horizon. He reached into the inner fold of his golden sash and pulled out a small, heavy object. It was a cylinder made of lapis lazuli, sealed with an intricately carved scarab that felt alive under the light of his collar.

He held it out to her. It was heavy, pulsing with a rhythm that matched the humming of the walls themselves.

"Clara," he began, his tone shifting from desire to a cold, razor-edged command. "There is a reason you were chosen to lead the expedition to my tomb. It was not chance. It was not academia."

She took the cylinder, her skin tingling where his fingers lingered for a second too long. "What is this?"

"The first key to the waking world," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But it is not a key to a door. It is a key to a memory. Look inside, when I am not watching. Look at the names etched on the inner casing."

"Why are you telling me this now?" she asked, clutching the object to her chest.

Akhenaten turned his back to her, his shadow stretching unnaturally long against the walls of the labyrinth, twisting into shapes that resembled grasping hands.

"Because," he said, his voice laced with a darkness that chilled her blood, "you think you are here to rescue history, Clara. You are actually here to facilitate a coup against the gods who trapped me. And if you look at the names... you will realize that your own bloodline is the one that shackled me to this eternity."

Before she could process the weight of his confession, the ground beneath them erupted. A massive tremor shook the labyrinth, sending plumes of sand and shadow into the air.

From the darkness ahead, a sound emerged—not a roar, but a voice. It was melodic, ancient, and chillingly familiar.

"Pharaoh," the voice trilled from the shadows. "The debt has come due. And the mortal... she is merely the interest."

Akhenaten spun around, his eyes blazing with a violet light, his hand reaching for his blade. "Run, Clara!" he screamed, but as she turned to flee, the shadows solidified into a wall of iron bars, sealing her into a tomb-like alcove.

She slammed her palms against the barrier, screaming his name as the darkness reached out to claim him.
