Curse of the Boy King

Bölüm 10

[Chapter 10]

The silence was not empty; it was pressurized. It hummed with the vibration of a billion shattered seconds, a low-frequency thrum that resonated in the marrow of Clara’s bones.

She wasn’t falling anymore. Gravity had become a philosophical suggestion rather than a law. She was suspended in the blinding, crystalline center of the machine—a space of white light that tasted like ozone and forgotten centuries. Every direction was a mirrored horizon, showing her versions of herself she hadn't lived yet, and versions of Akhenaten she prayed she would never have to meet.

Then, the heat hit her.

It was a searing, golden warmth, wrapping around her waist like a brand. Hands—hard, calloused, and smelling of ancient sandalwood and dried blood—yanked her backward into the density of a shadow.

Akhenaten.

He collapsed against her, his weight staggering, his breathing ragged and metallic. The air around them curdled with the smell of scorched ozone as the temporal void tried to knit itself shut, seeking to erase the intrusion of two souls that were never meant to be anchored here.

"You fool," he rasped, his voice echoing in the hollow space between heartbeats. He clutched her tighter, his chin digging into the sensitive crook of her shoulder. "I told you to run. I told you to let the machinery consume the void, not bury yourself in the gears with me."

Clara twisted in his grip, her hands fumbling until she found his chest. Beneath the golden filigree of his armor, his heart was a frantic, irregular rhythm—a percussion of desperation. "I couldn't leave you," she whispered, the words feeling fragile in the vast white expanse. "You aren't just my captor, Akhenaten. You’re the only thing that knows what it’s like to be trapped in this light."

He pulled back just enough to look at her. His eyes, usually cold, calculated obsidian, were fractured. The god-king facade was melting, leaving behind a man who looked haunted by the very eternity he had commanded. His thumb traced the line of her jaw, his touch lingering on the pulse point that hammered beneath her skin. The romantic tension was a jagged blade; it was suffocating, terrifying, and deeply, violently intimate.

"You don't understand what you’ve done," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. "By staying, you’ve locked us into the heart of the cycle. We are the fuel now. The machine doesn't just need your existence; it needs our union. It feeds on the friction between us."

He leaned in, his lips brushing against hers—a ghost of a kiss that carried the weight of a thousand years of longing. It wasn't gentle. It was a collision. He kissed her with the starvation of a man who had watched her slip away in every possible timeline, and she responded with the ferocious heat of a woman who had finally found the anchor in her storm.

But as their mouths met, the white light flared into a violent, bruised purple.

The machine buckled. The very structure of the chamber groaned as the reality of their proximity acted as a surge of electricity through the gears. The floor—or what passed for it—tilted.

Akhenaten broke the kiss, his eyes widening. He shoved her behind him, drawing a blade made of solidified starlight, his expression morphing from lover to warrior in a heartbeat. "The Guardians," he hissed. "They aren't just here to kill us. They’re here to harvest the anchor."

Shadows began to leak into the white void—monstrous, elongated figures of shifting geometry, the Guardians of the Void. They were the cleaners of the timeline, and they did not care for the sanctity of human emotion. They saw only a glitch in the system, and they were here to excise it.

"Clara," Akhenaten commanded, his voice tight with a terrifying protectiveness. "Listen to me. The throne—the control interface—it’s behind the veil of light to your left. If you reach it, you can rewrite the exit point. You can leave."

"Without you?" she screamed, clutching his arm, her nails digging into his tunic. "I am not leaving without you."

"If I go with you, the loop never breaks," he said, his voice dropping to a jagged whisper. He looked at her then, truly looked at her, and for the first time, she saw the depths of his sacrifice. He wasn't just holding them together; he was holding the machine apart so she could escape. "I am the curse, Clara. I am the reason the gears keep turning. If you want to be free, you have to let me stay behind to hold the door shut."

"No," she sobbed, the word caught in a throat tight with grief.

"Yes," he countered, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb smearing a trail of stardust that clung to her skin. "I’ve spent an eternity watching you die. Let me spend one moment knowing you’re alive because of me."

The Guardians shrieked—a sound like metal grinding on bone—and surged forward. Akhenaten turned, a whirlwind of gold and shadow, his blade carving arcs of destruction into the encroaching void. He was a god of war fighting a battle he knew he couldn't win, purely to buy her seconds.

Clara scrambled toward the veil of light. Her mind was racing, the blueprints of the machine etched into her subconscious by the very nature of her being. She could see the nexus point, the lever that would collapse the machine into a single, permanent reality. But as she touched the interface, the floor tilted violently, throwing her off balance.

She looked back. Akhenaten was surrounded. A Guardian’s blade had pierced his shoulder, black ichor leaking from the wound to evaporate into the void. He was staggering, his strength failing, his eyes locked onto hers with a desperate, burning intensity.

"Choose, Clara!" he roared, batting away a strike that would have decapitated him. "Choose the world or choose me!"

She reached for the lever, her hand hovering in the air. The choice wasn't just about the machine; it was about the path forward. If she pulled it now, she would be transported out—but the feedback loop would disintegrate Akhenaten, erasing him from every history, every memory, and every timeline.

"If I save you, we’re trapped here forever!" she cried out.

"But we'll be together," he shouted back, his voice strained, his defenses crumbling under the onslaught.

She gripped the lever. Her heart shattered. She realized that the 'curse' wasn't the machine; it was the love that made the idea of a future without him feel like a death sentence.

Suddenly, a massive, jagged shadow—the leader of the Guardians—loomed over Akhenaten, its blade descending toward his throat.

Clara slammed the lever down, not to the 'exit' position, but to the 'overload' position.

The entire chamber screamed. A blinding, golden shockwave erupted from the center, throwing both Clara and Akhenaten backward into the maw of the abyss. The world dissolved into static, the reality of the machine tearing itself apart, and as she tumbled into the absolute dark, she felt Akhenaten’s hand find hers, his fingers interlocking with hers with a grip that felt like the end of all things.

Then, the darkness turned into fire.
