Crimson Tides

Bölüm 6

Breaking the Seal

The ocean did not roar; it shrieked. It was a sound of rending metal and splintering bone, the rhythm of a world being torn apart by something ancient and hungry.

Elena felt the impact before she saw it. The wall of water, stained a bruised, visceral crimson, hit them like a falling mountain. Air was stolen from her lungs, replaced by the stinging, metallic salt of a sea that felt less like water and more like blood. She was spinning—tumbling through a kaleidoscope of swirling darkness and phosphorescent red light.

Then, an anchor.

A hand, calloused and searingly hot against the freezing temperature of the deep, clamped around her waist. Damian. He didn’t just hold her; he claimed her, pulling her into the hollow of his body as they were dragged downward into the abyss. Even beneath the crushing weight of the tide, the friction of his skin against hers was a jolt of pure, frantic electricity.

She opened her eyes, blinking against the sting. They were deep now, the surface light reduced to a flickering, sickly glow far above. She looked at him—Damian, his face a mask of primal focus, his hair floating around his head like a dark halo. His eyes were wide, glowing with an intensity that transcended the human, scanning the murky depths for a way out.

He pressed his forehead against hers, a silent, frantic communion. He didn’t need to speak; the current carried his intent, his desperation, his raw, unyielding need to keep her breathing. Elena gripped his shoulders, her fingers digging into his wet shirt, and for a heartbeat, the terror of the drowning world faded, replaced by the overwhelming gravity of their connection. It was a magnetic pull, a dark tether that vibrated in her very marrow.

He kicked downward, his powerful legs driving them toward a jagged shadow looming on the ocean floor—a submerged ruin, ancient and jagged. With a final, lung-bursting thrust, he slammed them into the sanctuary of an alcove, shielded from the violent churn of the currents.

They hit the stone floor hard. Elena gasped, the sound ragged and sharp as she dragged oxygen into her burning lungs. Damian didn't let go. He pinned her against the cold, barnacle-crusted wall, his body shielding her from the residual tremors of the sea.

"Elena," he rasped, his voice vibrating through the stone and into her back. His face was inches from hers, his gaze dark, predatory, yet haunted by a devastating tenderness. "Look at me. Keep your eyes on me."

She nodded, her breath coming in shallow, shuddering hitches. Her hands were still splayed against his chest, feeling the frantic, dual-thrumming of his heart. It was too fast—not human, not entirely.

"The device," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the muffled thunder of the ocean. "It didn’t just trigger a wave, Damian. It... it woke something up."

Damian’s jaw tightened. He leaned closer, his nose brushing against her temple, a deliberate, agonizingly slow caress that sent a shiver racing down her spine. The attraction between them was a volatile chemical reaction, dangerous and inevitable. In the dark, the scent of him—ocean salt, iron, and the sharp, spicy musk of danger—was intoxicating.

"It wasn't a weapon, Elena," he murmured, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw, his touch lingering on the pulse point of her throat. "It was a lock. And we just broke the seal."

He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his pupils blown wide, swallowing the iris. He reached into his tactical vest, his movements stiff, and pulled out a small, metallic object that had been hidden in a waterproof casing. It was a shard, jagged and humming with a low-frequency vibration that made Elena’s teeth ache.

It was glowing. The metal was etched with symbols that seemed to shift and crawl like insects under her gaze.

"You recognized this back at the harbor," Damian said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper. "You didn't just stumble into this, Elena. You knew the weight of this thing before you touched it."

Elena felt her heart stutter. The secret she had carried—the fragmented memories of a childhood spent in whispers and shadows—suddenly coalesced into a sharp, painful truth. She reached out, her hand trembling, and brushed the glowing symbol on the shard. As her skin made contact, a flash of red light blinded her, and the cave walls around them groaned as if responding to her touch.

"I didn't recognize the device," she confessed, her voice thick with sudden, terrifying clarity. "I recognized the language. My father... he didn't die in an accident, Damian. He was searching for the gatekeeper."

Damian’s expression shifted, a flicker of something raw and unrecognizable crossing his face—a mix of awe and dread. He leaned down, his lips ghosting over her ear, his breath hot against her skin. "And what if I told you, Elena, that you aren't the one looking for the gatekeeper? What if the gatekeeper has been waiting for you to come home?"

The air in the cave grew heavy, ionizing until the hair on her arms stood up. The silence that followed was worse than the roar of the ocean. Damian’s hand dropped from her jaw to the nape of her neck, his grip firm, possessive, a warning.

"We aren't alone here," he whispered, his eyes shifting toward the pitch-black tunnel behind them.

From the darkness of the submerged ruins, a sound emerged. It wasn't the sea. It was a rhythmic, clicking chant—a language of clicks and hisses that made the blood run cold in Elena’s veins. It was the same language etched into the shard.

Damian spun, pulling her behind him, his knife drawn, the blade gleaming with a faint, bioluminescent light. The water in the cave began to glow, hundreds of faint, predatory sparks emerging from the gloom.

"Don't let go," Damian commanded, his voice a low growl of absolute possessiveness. "Whatever you do, Elena, do not break the contact between us. They can smell your blood, but they fear the bond."

He turned back to her, his face inches from hers again, his eyes burning with an intensity that bordered on madness. "They want the shard. And they want you. But they will have to tear my heart out to get to either."

A shadow, massive and undulating, detached itself from the ceiling of the cavern, its eyes twin burning embers in the dark. It descended, a creature of nightmare and old magic, its limbs trailing like ribbons of silk in the water.

Damian pulled her flush against him, his lips finding hers in a kiss that tasted of salt and impending death—a desperate, bruising claim that tasted like forever. As the creature lunged, the floor beneath them began to drop away into a bottomless trench.
