Crimson Tides

Bölüm 2

Submerged Echoes

The shockwave didn’t just rattle the glass of the terrace; it shuddered through the marrow of Elena’s bones.

The low, guttural roar of the explosion blossomed beneath the surface of the restricted cove like a bruised flower, turning the tranquil midnight indigo of the Ionian Sea into a boiling, frothing cauldron of white foam. Moments later, the terrace floor tilted—or perhaps it was just the vertigo of her own racing heart.

Damian didn’t flinch. He didn’t even blink. He remained leaning against the marble balustrade, his silhouette carved from the same predatory granite as the cliffs surrounding the resort. He looked out at the churning water with the detached interest of a man watching a storm he had personally summoned.

"What did you do?" Elena breathed, her voice thin against the sudden, unnatural silence that followed the blast. She gripped the wrought-iron railing, her knuckles turning white. "That wasn't a seismic tremor, Damian. That was a localized detonation."

Damian turned his head slowly. The ambient light from the villa caught the sharp, cruel planes of his face, the hollows beneath his cheekbones casting shadows that seemed to pulse in time with his breathing. He wore his secrets like a second skin, tailored and expensive, yet reeking of something far older and more dangerous than money.

"You have a vivid imagination, Elena," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that skated over her skin like a serrated blade. He took a step toward her. He was impossibly still, a predator that had decided the prey was worth the hunt. "The ocean is a fickle mistress. Sometimes she demands a sacrifice."

"Don't talk to me in riddles," she snapped, though her pulse hammered a frantic rhythm against her throat—a tell he was already watching. "I know this resort is a front. I know the environmental impact reports were falsified. That explosion... that was proof of something illegal happening under your watch. Who is down there?"

Damian stopped inches from her. He was tall—imposing—and his presence seemed to suck the oxygen out of the terrace. He smelled of salt, expensive tobacco, and a cold, metallic undertone that made her hair stand on end. He reached out, his hand hovering near her waist, not touching, but close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his palm.

"You are so desperate for a villain, little bird," he whispered, his eyes dark, unreadable pits of obsidian. He leaned in, his mouth hovering near the shell of her ear. "But look around you. The world is burning, the tides are rising, and you are worried about a few stray bubbles in the deep. You’re playing a game of chess with pieces you don’t even recognize."

Elena shuddered, caught between the urge to strike him and the terrifying, magnetic pull to lean into him. He was dangerous—everything about him screamed *run*—yet the proximity of his body, the raw, masculine tension radiating from him, sparked a fire in her belly that had nothing to do with fear. It was an attraction so sharp it felt like a wound.

"Then explain it," she challenged, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. "Show me why the cove is restricted. Show me what's worth dying for."

Damian let out a dark, humorless chuckle. His hand finally settled on her hip, his grip firm, possessive, and scorching through the thin silk of her evening gown. He pulled her a fraction closer. The air between them hummed with static.

"Curiosity is a terminal illness," he said, his thumb tracing the curve of her hip bone in a slow, agonizingly deliberate motion. "If I show you the truth, Elena, there is no going back to your life of moral crusades and journalistic integrity. You will belong to the dark, just like the rest of us."

"I don't belong to anyone," she hissed, though the hand she pressed against his chest to push him away faltered. His heartbeat was steady, rhythmic, and terrifyingly slow.

"Everyone belongs to something," he countered, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. The intensity in his expression was predatory, a silent claim that made her breath hitch. "You belong to the truth. And the truth is currently bleeding out in that cove."

Another tremor shook the terrace, more violent than the first. Debris from the cliffside tumbled into the sea, a cacophony of stone hitting water. The lights of the resort flickered and died, plunging the terrace into a suffocating, velvet darkness illuminated only by the pale, ethereal glow of the moon reflecting off the churning sea.

Damian didn't release her. Instead, his other hand came up, cradling the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in the hair at her nape. The heat of him was intoxicating. She felt dizzy, trapped in a web of his making.

"Listen," he commanded, his voice dropping to a whisper that vibrated through her entire frame.

Above the sound of the retreating waves, she heard it. Not the echo of the explosion, but the distinct, rhythmic mechanical hum of something massive surfacing in the cove. Something heavy. Something metallic. And then, the unmistakable sound of voices—harsh, guttural, and speaking a language she didn't recognize.

"They've breached the perimeter," Damian said, his grip on her tightening. "And they aren't here for environmental research."

"Who are they?" Elena asked, her fear finally overtaking her defiance.

Damian pulled her into the shadows of the stone pillars, shielding her from the view of the cove. His eyes were wide, glittering with a strange, dark excitement. "The people who own the tide, Elena. And if we stay here, you’re about to see exactly what happens when the predators decide to feed."

Suddenly, a laser sight—a pinpoint of angry red light—danced across the stone pillar just inches from Elena’s head. Damian reacted with predatory speed, spinning her around and pinning her against the rough stone wall, his body shielding hers completely.

"Don't move," he commanded, his voice a lethal whisper against her lips. "If you breathe, they’ll hear you."

As he pressed his forehead against hers, the world narrowed down to the heat of his skin, the frantic beat of their hearts, and the terrifying realization that they were no longer just observers of the carnage. They were the targets.

A shadow detached itself from the gloom of the staircase—a man, tall and silent, with a silenced weapon raised. He stepped onto the terrace, his eyes sweeping the darkness. He wasn't looking for the resort manager. He was looking for blood.

Damian’s hand moved, sliding from her neck to his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small, obsidian-black device and pressed it against Elena’s palm.

"If I go down," he whispered, his eyes locking onto hers with a finality that shattered her defenses, "you run toward the cove. Don't look back. Don't look for me. Just open that door."

The intruder stepped into the moonlight.
