Crimson Tides

Bölüm 15

The Tragedy of Choice

The air in the sub-basement was thick with the copper tang of blood and the suffocating scent of pulverized concrete. Elena’s lungs burned, each breath a jagged scrape against her ribs, but her pulse hammered in her ears, louder than the groans of the dying structure.

Before her, the shadows coalesced into a silhouette that defied the laws of memory. Silas. The man who had been buried under a mountain of saltwater and shrapnel three years ago stood before her, his coat dusted with the same grey grime that coated Elena’s skin. His eyes were like shards of obsidian, devoid of warmth, fixed on the leather satchel clutched against her chest—the drive that held the secrets of the Syndicate.

To her left, buried beneath a steel support beam that had groaned and buckled during the collapse, was Damian.

"Elena," Damian’s voice was a ragged growl, stripped of its usual arrogance. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound that turned Elena’s blood to ice. "Don't. The drive. If he gets it, he wins. Leave me."

The audacity of him—to command her even while he was pinned like a trapped animal. Elena’s gaze flickered to him. Damian’s face was smeared with a mixture of oil and crimson, his dark hair matted to his forehead. Despite the agony radiating from his crushed legs, his eyes weren't on his own mortality. They were locked on her, a mixture of raw, possessive devotion and a silent, desperate command to survive.

"You don't get to tell me what to do, Damian," she hissed, though the tremor in her hands betrayed her.

Silas took a languid step forward, his boots crunching on the jagged glass that littered the floor. "The tragedy of choice," he murmured, his voice as smooth as silk dragged over a grave. "Save the man who taught you how to kill, or save the mission that justifies the blood on your hands. You were always so sentimental, Elena. It’s a weakness that has cost you everything."

Elena shifted her weight. Her holster was empty—her weapon lost in the initial tremor. She had nothing but the drive, a tactical knife hidden in her boot, and a soul that had been frayed to the point of snapping.

"I remember what you did to my father," Elena said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. She didn't look at Silas; she watched his reflection in a shard of mirror hanging from a broken bulkhead. She was calculating. Measuring the distance. "I remember the smell of the fire."

"And yet," Silas countered, his gaze darting to Damian, then back to her, "you're standing there paralyzed by the prospect of losing your lapdog. Is he worth the collapse of the empire, Elena? Is one night of heat and shared secrets worth the global shift of power?"

Damian let out a sharp, pained laugh that ended in a sharp intake of air. "He’s trying to goad you, *cara*," Damian croaked, his fingers clawing uselessly at the cold, unforgiving steel pinning his thighs. "He’s terrified because he knows you’re the only one who can outrun him. Don't look at me. Look at the shadows behind his left shoulder."

Elena didn't look. She felt the shift in the air—the subtle intake of breath, the slight tension in Silas’s posture. He was preparing to strike.

The attraction between her and Damian wasn't just a physical compulsion; it was a gravitational pull, a dark, chaotic symmetry that made them feel like the only two beings left in a dying world. Every time they touched, it was a battle for dominance, a dance of knives disguised as intimacy. And now, seeing him broken—this man who had built walls of steel around his heart only to let her pick the lock—something inside Elena broke. Not her resolve, but her hesitation.

"I’m not choosing between you," Elena said, her voice dropping to a whisper that vibrated with newfound clarity.

She feigned a stumble, her body swaying as if weakened by the smoke. Silas pounced, his hand darting out to snatch the satchel. As he closed the distance, Elena didn't retreat. She lunged forward, not toward the satchel, but toward him, driving the heel of her boot into his kneecap with the force of her entire existence.

Silas roared, his composure shattering as he buckled. Elena didn't stop. She spun, swinging the heavy satchel with everything she had, the metal casing striking Silas across the temple with a sickening thud. He staggered back, reeling, but his hand lashed out, gripping her throat.

The world tilted. Elena felt her oxygen cut off, the pressure on her windpipe bringing a rush of darkness to the edges of her vision.

"Elena!" Damian screamed, the sound tearing from his throat, raw and desperate. His face was a mask of agony—not for his crushed legs, but for the life being strangled out of her. He surged, his hands finding purchase on a loose pipe near his pinned legs. With a feral, bone-cracking heave, he ignored the scream of his own anatomy, pulling his crushed limbs from the debris. He was bleeding profusely, dragging himself across the floor, a wounded predator fighting through the haze of shock.

Silas laughed, his grip tightening on Elena’s throat. "Look at him, Elena. He’d tear the world down just to see you breathe for another minute. How pathetic. How... exquisite."

"Go to hell," Elena choked out. She reached down, her fingers grazing the hilt of the knife in her boot.

Damian reached them, his hand latching onto Silas’s arm. He didn't have the strength to fight, but he had the weight of his rage. He slammed his body into Silas, a brutal, ugly collision that forced Silas to loosen his grip on Elena’s neck.

Elena gasped, the air rushing back into her lungs like needles. She didn't hesitate. She whipped the knife out and buried it deep into Silas’s shoulder, a crimson arc painting the grey wall behind him. Silas let out a grunt of shock, stumbling back, his eyes widening as he realized he’d underestimated the ferocity of their bond.

The structure groaned, a deep, tectonic rumble that warned of the final collapse. A massive slab of concrete directly above them cracked, dust raining down like ash.

"The exit," Damian gasped, leaning heavily on Elena, his blood soaking through her jacket. "The ventilation shaft, five meters to the right."

They turned, but Silas was already scrambling to his feet, blood dripping from his shoulder, his eyes burning with an unholy light. He wasn't reaching for a weapon; he was reaching for the detonator hanging from his belt.

"If I can't have the drive," Silas hissed, his thumb hovering over the red button, "then neither of you will leave this tomb."

Elena locked eyes with Damian. He looked at her with such profound, dark love that for a heartbeat, the collapse, the danger, and the Syndicate ceased to exist.

"Trust me," she whispered.

"Always," Damian replied, his grip on her waist tightening, his thumb tracing a desperate line over her hip.

The building let out a final, deafening scream as the ceiling began to disintegrate, and Silas pressed his thumb down.
