Crimson Tides

Bölüm 13

Ruining You

The roar of the facility’s dying breath was a cacophony of screeching metal and the rhythmic, guttural hum of the impending core collapse. Elena clutched the edge of the jagged bulkhead, her knuckles white, her breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. Beside her, Damian was a silhouette of violent grace, his tactical vest shredded, blood matting the dark hair at his temple.

The floor beneath them didn't just break; it betrayed them, vanishing into the abyss of the sub-levels. They tumbled, limbs tangling in a desperate, frantic scramble for purchase. Damian caught her. He slammed her back against a protruding steel support beam, his body shielding her from the flying debris, his hands anchoring her to him with a possessiveness that felt like a bruise.

"Don't let go," he rasped, his voice cutting through the mechanical death throes.

Elena looked up. His eyes were wide, dilated, the familiar cold detachment replaced by a raw, frantic hunger. He wasn't just holding her to keep her from falling; he was anchoring his own sanity to her. In the darkness, with the orange pulse of the failing core casting long, hellish shadows across his face, he looked like a fallen god.

"Silas," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The man stood on the catwalk above them, silhouetted against the blinding, fractured light of the reactor. He wasn't running. He was watching, his smile thin and serpentine, a portrait of ruin. He held the master override, the small, pulsing drive that could have saved them—or doomed them—now dangling carelessly from his fingers.

"You’re playing house in a grave, Damian," Silas called out, his voice unnervingly calm, amplified by the facility’s PA system. "Do you really think she’s worth the descent? Once this goes, the ocean will swallow every trace of what we’ve built. And you two will just be dust in the silt."

Damian didn't look at Silas. He looked at Elena. He brushed a stray, soot-stained lock of hair from her forehead, his thumb lingering on the pulse point of her neck. The touch was agonizingly tender, a stark contrast to the violence of the collapsing structure.

"Is he right?" Damian asked, his voice dropping to a gravelly low that made Elena’s stomach flip. "Are you worth it, Elena? Because if I turn away from this now—if I ignore the core, if I let him walk away with the data—I’m a dead man. And you’re the woman who kept me from the kill."

"We aren't dead yet," she breathed, reaching up to grip his tactical vest. The fabric was coarse under her fingertips, warm with his body heat. "Don't let him win by making you choose. There has to be another way."

"There is no way," Damian said, leaning in so close that their lips were mere millimeters apart. The scent of ozone, blood, and his own sharp, musky cologne enveloped her. "There is only this. Right now. The clock is ticking, the world is ending, and all I can think about is that I never got to properly ruin you."

The dark, dangerous promise in his tone sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core. It was the darkest form of intimacy—a confession of obsession spoken amidst the debris of a catastrophe. Elena didn't shrink away. Instead, she leaned into him, her hand sliding up to the nape of his neck, her fingers tangling in the hair there.

"Then ruin me," she challenged, her eyes locked onto his, defiance mingling with a desperate, burgeoning desire. "But do it while we’re still breathing."

Damian let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-growl. He pulled her flush against him, his mouth crashing onto hers in a kiss that tasted of iron and desperation. It wasn't soft; it was a reclamation. His tongue swept into her mouth, claiming space, asserting dominance, a frantic exploration that mirrored the instability of the floor beneath them.

Silas’s laughter echoed above, cold and mocking. "Pathetic. Even at the end, you’re slaves to your impulses."

Damian broke the kiss, his breathing ragged. He pulled a jagged piece of shrapnel from his belt, his eyes fixed on Silas. "Stay here," he ordered, his voice thick with the residual heat of their kiss.

"No," Elena countered, grabbing his wrist. "If he has the drive, we move together. If I stay here, I die here. I'm not waiting for an ending I didn't choose."

Damian looked at her, searching her face for the flicker of fear, but finding only a reflection of his own dark resolve. He gave a single, sharp nod. "On my signal. We flank him."

As they moved—a synchronized dance of instinct and survival—the reactor began to whine, a high-pitched scream that signaled the final sixty seconds. The catwalk shifted, metal groaning in protest. Silas took a step back, his foot slipping on a pool of hydraulic fluid.

"You think you’re the villains?" Silas shouted, clutching the drive to his chest as the walkway began to sag under his weight. "You’re just collateral damage in a story you don't even understand!"

Damian surged forward, his speed predatory. He vaulted over a gap in the railing, catching the edge of the platform Silas stood on. The impact sent a shudder through the entire structure. The facility groaned, the lights flickering, dying, leaving them in the pulsating crimson glow of the emergency lights.

Elena lunged for the other side, her boots finding purchase on the slick grating. She saw Silas pivot, reaching for the sidearm holstered at his hip.

"Damian, watch out!" she screamed.

But Silas wasn't aiming at Damian. He was aiming at the pipework directly above Elena’s head—the primary cooling line. One shot, and the steam would vent, incinerating everything in the corridor.

Damian saw it too. His eyes widened, a rare flash of raw terror crossing his features—not for himself, but for her. He launched himself across the widening chasm toward Silas, abandoning his own safety.

"Elena, get down!"

The gunshot rang out, deafening in the confined space. A plume of white, superheated steam hissed into the air, a roar like a dragon waking from its slumber. The catwalk beneath Silas gave way entirely, plunging him into the darkness of the reactor pit.

The shockwave threw Elena backward. She tumbled into the dark, her fingers clawing at empty air.

"Elena!"

Damian’s hand shot out, catching her wrist just as she slipped over the edge. His fingers bit into her skin, his shoulder slamming into the railing with a bone-jarring thud. He was dangling over the abyss, holding her suspended by a single, desperate connection.

Above them, the core began to cycle into its final, blinding white flash.

"Hold on!" he roared, his muscles straining against the weight of her.

"The drive!" she gasped, looking down. The device had slipped from Silas’s grip, caught on a sliver of grating three feet below them.

"Forget the drive!" Damian grunted, his face contorted in agony as the railing began to bend. "I’ve got you! Don't let go, Elena, look at me!"

She looked up at him. His face was etched in grime and sweat, but his eyes were focused solely on her, a fierce, protective light burning in the dark.

The floor above them disintegrated, and the gravity shifted, pulling them both toward the white-hot center of the core.
