Beneath the Cathedral

Bölüm 5

[Chapter 5]

The silence of the Palermo Cathedral was usually a sanctuary, a thick, velvet shroud that muffled the chaos of the outside world. But tonight, the stones themselves felt porous, leaking a cold, jagged dread that seeped into my marrow. My fingers hovered over the ivory keys of the pipe organ, trembling. I wasn’t playing. I hadn’t played a note in ten minutes.

Every shadow in the nave seemed to have eyes. Every flicker of the votive candles felt like a spotlight trained on my sins. *Twelve years.* Twelve years of keeping the blood under my fingernails, of scrubbing the memory of that night until my skin was raw, only to find that the man who had been the architect of my quiet life—Lorenzo Marchetti—had been the one to bury the evidence of my crime.

"The acoustics in here are divine, aren't they, Serafina?"

The voice didn't come from the pews. It came from the shadows directly behind me, so close that the warmth of his breath brushed against the sensitive skin of my neck. I jerked, my knee slamming into the organ console with a dull thud.

Lorenzo didn’t reach for me, but his presence was a physical weight, a gravitational pull that crushed the air from my lungs. He stood just behind my shoulder, perfectly still, his silhouette a jagged tear in the dim light of the choir loft. He smelled of sandalwood and the sharp, metallic tang of the storm brewing over the Tyrrhenian.

"How did you get up here?" I whispered, my voice sounding thin and brittle against the vaulted ceiling.

"I own the locks," he said, his tone as smooth and cold as polished marble. "I own the history of this place. Did you truly think you could hide from the ghosts of your past in a house of God, when I have been the one guarding the gate?"

I stood up, my chair scraping harshly against the stone floor. I wanted to run, but my legs felt leaden. He was a mountain of a man, his tailoring immaculate, his eyes—those dark, piercing voids—tracking my every tremor with predatory patience. To the world, he was a benefactor, a man of culture and immense wealth. To me, he was the jailer who held the key to my cage, and he had just informed me that the wolves were at the door.

"The family," I managed to choke out. "They’re here, aren't they?"

Lorenzo stepped forward, closing the space until his chest was inches from my back. He didn't touch me, but he hovered—a suffocating blanket of shadow. I could feel the heat radiating from him, a stark contrast to the glacial cold of my own skin.

"They have been searching for their lost son for over a decade," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rasp. "They are not clever men, Serafina. They are impulsive. Brute force is their only language. They believe their son simply wandered off into the night. They have no idea that he met his end at the hands of a terrified girl, or that the man who cleaned up the mess is currently standing behind her, deciding exactly how much of their blood he needs to spill to keep her silence intact."

I spun around, desperate to look him in the eye, to find a crack in his armor. "Why? Why save me? Why watch me for all these years, only to reveal yourself now? You could have let them find me."

He raised a hand, his fingers tracing the air just millimeters from my jawline. He didn't make contact, but the tension was so thick I could taste it, a mixture of adrenaline and something far more terrifying. His gaze locked onto mine, possessive and absolute, stripped of the polite veneer he wore for the public.

"Because you were never meant to be lost," he whispered. "You were meant to be found by me. You belong to the secrets I keep, Serafina. And I have never, in my life, been willing to share what is mine."

His hand finally moved. He caught a loose lock of my hair, winding it slowly around his index finger, his knuckles brushing against my cheek. The contact sent a jolt of pure, panicked electricity through me. His skin was rough, a stark reminder of the violence he was capable of, yet his touch was agonizingly slow, deliberate.

"You are terrified," he noted, his eyes narrowing as he studied my face. "Good. Fear keeps you sharp. Fear ensures you understand that the sanctuary you thought you had is gone. From this moment on, you exist only within the radius of my protection."

"Protection or ownership?" I countered, my breath hitching as he leaned in closer. The smell of him was intoxicating, a lethal blend of luxury and danger that made my head spin.

"Is there a difference?" he asked, his voice a soft, dangerous caress.

He leaned down, his lips ghosting over the shell of my ear. I shivered violently, my hands clutching the back of the organ bench to keep from collapsing. He wasn't kissing me, but the proximity was a violation in itself, a claim being staked in the most intimate of spaces.

"The men who seek you are already in the city," he whispered into my ear, his hand sliding from my hair to the nape of my neck, his thumb pressing firmly against my pulse point. I felt my heart hammering against his skin, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. "They will try to break you to find the truth. They will burn this city to the ground to reach you. But they will have to go through me first."

He pulled back just enough to look at me, his eyes dark with an obsession that made me want to scream and surrender all at once. He leaned into my space, his body pressing mine back against the heavy wood of the console, pinning me there with nothing but the sheer force of his will.

"Are you ready to see what I’m willing to do to keep you, Serafina?"

Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the bottom of the spiral staircase leading to the loft groaned. The sound of boots—heavy, rhythmic, and purposeful—echoed through the cathedral, rising toward us like the tolling of a funeral bell.

Lorenzo didn’t flinch. He didn’t reach for a weapon. He simply leaned closer, his eyes fixed on mine with a chilling, triumphant spark.

"They’re here," he whispered, his thumb dragging across my lower lip. "And they have no idea that they’ve just walked into their graves."
