Bankrupt His Empire

Chapter 3

The after-hours quiet of Drake Industries settled over Iris like a second skin, a peculiar blend of solace and acute vigilance. The vast executive floor, usually a symphony of hushed conversations and keyboard clacks, now hummed with the dormant energy of powerful machines and the distant thrum of the city below. Outside her panoramic window, Manhattan glittered, a mosaic of defiant light against the encroaching night, mirroring the unresolved chaos within her.

Her gaze, dark and unyielding, was fixed on the ‘Q’ initial, reproduced meticulously on a fresh sheet of paper from the original document. Beside it, she’d placed a birthday card from her father, a relic from her childhood, the looping, distinctive ‘Q’ of his familiar signature starkly identical. The weight of that certainty pressed down, cold and unyielding, stealing the warmth from the air-conditioned office. Her father. The man who taught her integrity, who always preached honesty above all else. Could he be entangled in something nefarious, something connected to the very empire she was now tasked with dissecting? The thought was a bitter, metallic taste on her tongue.

Knox’s reaction earlier that day still replayed in her mind – the swift flicker of surprise, the guarded defensiveness, the abrupt closure of the conversation. It wasn’t the dismissive arrogance she’d grown accustomed to from him, but something more primal, more revealing. It hinted at knowledge, at a deeply personal connection to ‘Athena Global Holdings’ that went beyond mere corporate oversight. Was he protecting her father? Or was he protecting himself, and her father was just another pawn in a larger, more intricate game?

She pushed away from her desk, the leather of her chair sighing in protest. The air felt thick, charged with unanswered questions. Her investigation into Athena Global had hit a wall of carefully constructed opacity; the paper trail led nowhere conclusive, a labyrinth of shell companies and offshore accounts. It was deliberately designed to obscure, a whisper of a warning that this was no ordinary corporate discrepancy. She needed a new angle, a moment of vulnerability, or perhaps, a confrontation under different circumstances.

A soft click of a door latch echoed down the silent corridor, pulling her from her thoughts. Iris’s head snapped up. The sound was too precise, too deliberate to be accidental. Footsteps, firm and unhurried, drew closer. Her breath caught, a silent recognition tightening her chest. Knox Drake. Of course. It was an unspoken rule that he haunted these halls after hours, a restless spirit tethered to his empire.

He appeared in the doorway of her office, framed by the cool glow of the overhead lights. He wore a dark suit, his tie loosened, the sleeves of his pristine white shirt rolled up to reveal strong forearms. A subtle scent, clean and undeniably masculine, preceded him, a potent counterpoint to the sterile office air. His eyes, the color of storm-swept sea, found hers across the expansive room, a silent current arcing between them. The intensity of his gaze was a physical touch, a jolt she felt deep within her bones.

“Still here, Quinn?” His voice was a low rumble, devoid of inflection, yet it vibrated with an undercurrent she couldn't decipher. Curiosity? Annoyance? Something else entirely?

“Still working, Drake,” she retorted, her voice steadier than she felt. She met his gaze directly, refusing to yield ground. “Some of us have a lot to unravel.” She gestured vaguely at the scattered documents on her desk, the very ones she knew he knew referred to Athena Global.

He stepped fully into the office, the door swinging shut behind him with a soft thud that seemed to seal them into their own contained world. The air grew perceptibly heavier, charged with an unspoken tension that was both alluring and unsettling. He stopped a few feet from her desk, his imposing presence filling the space, making her feel acutely aware of her own body, of the rapid beat of her pulse.

“Unraveling what, precisely?” he asked, his voice softer now, almost a challenge. His eyes dropped to the papers, though not directly to the ‘Q’ she’d so carefully placed. He seemed to scan the general vicinity, a flicker of something unreadable passing through his expression.

Iris picked up a file, feigning a deep dive into its contents, needing a moment to compose herself. “The labyrinthine finances of Drake Industries. A Herculean task, even for the most dedicated.” She paused, then slowly lifted her gaze to his. “Though certain entities, like ‘Athena Global Holdings,’ seem particularly… obscure.”

A muscle twitched in his jaw. “Harrison handles Athena Global.” It was his standard deflection, yet the subtle clench of his fists, the slight narrowing of his eyes, betrayed a deeper engagement. He was holding something back, she was certain.

“So you’ve said,” Iris replied, her tone deceptively mild. “Yet your signature appears on multiple payment authorizations. And, curiously, the initial ‘Q’ – which now, thanks to some digging, seems to be a recurring motif.” She watched him, dissecting every micro-expression.

His eyes, which had been fixed on hers, now slid away, sweeping over the office as if searching for an escape, or perhaps, a hidden microphone. The tension ratcheted up another notch. He moved closer, circling the desk slowly, like a predator assessing its prey. She tracked his movement, her senses heightened.

“The ‘Q’ initial,” he repeated, the words slow, deliberate. He stopped beside her, so close she could feel the faint warmth radiating from his body, the subtle pull of his presence. The scent of his cologne, sharp and expensive, filled her nostrils, momentarily clouding her focus. Their shoulders were almost brushing, separated by only an inch of air, yet it felt like a vast, uncrossable chasm, and simultaneously, an impossibly narrow gap.

He leaned in slightly, his gaze dropping to the papers on her desk, his voice a low murmur that seemed to bypass her ears and resonate directly in her chest. “What about the ‘Q’ initial, Quinn?”

His proximity was suffocating, exhilarating. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the sudden, overwhelming awareness of him. Her eyes, drawn by an invisible force, met his again. For a long moment, the world outside them ceased to exist. There was only the charged silence, the heat between their bodies, the unspoken question hanging in the air. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a flicker of something raw, something she couldn’t quite decipher – concern? Challenge? Undeniable, electric attraction?

His gaze dipped to her lips, a subtle, almost imperceptible shift, but it sent a shiver through her. Her own lips parted slightly, a soft, involuntary intake of breath. The space between them thrummed with a dangerous energy, a magnetic pull that threatened to erase the last vestiges of professional distance. She felt an almost irresistible urge to lean into him, to bridge that tiny, charged gap, to discover if the heat simmering between them was real, or just a trick of her overworked mind.

Just as the silence threatened to break, just as her breath caught in a silent plea, he straightened, a sharp, almost imperceptible withdrawal. The moment shattered, leaving behind a faint, lingering ache.

He cleared his throat, the sound rough. “Some signatures are simply… endorsements of a process, not necessarily a deep dive into every detail.” He paused, his eyes now averted, focusing on a point beyond her shoulder. “And the ‘Q’… it’s a standard internal code for legacy project authorization. Nothing more.”

A standard internal code. Iris felt a cold wave wash over her, cutting through the dizzying haze of their proximity. He was lying. Or at least, he was heavily obfuscating. Her father’s familiar handwriting, so utterly distinct, could not be a “standard internal code.” He had to know. He *had* to.

“Legacy project authorization,” she repeated, her voice thin, still raw from the aborted moment. “Curious, then, that it appears on payments to a company that, according to all public records, was only incorporated eighteen months ago.” She watched him closely, seeing the subtle stiffening of his posture, the slight tightening around his eyes. She’d found the crack.

He turned to leave, his face once again a mask of carefully constructed indifference, the moment of vulnerability gone. “Some ‘legacy projects’ have long gestation periods, Quinn. Don’t assume you know the full picture from a partial data set.”

He was at the door, his hand on the cold metal handle, when Iris spoke again, her voice quiet, but piercing. “My father’s handwriting, Knox. I recognize it anywhere. That ‘Q’ is his.”

He froze, his back to her, his hand still on the handle. The silence stretched, long and excruciating. The only sound was the frantic beat of her own heart. Slowly, he turned his head, his profile illuminated by the faint glow of the corridor light. His eyes, though shadowed, held an intensity that made her instinctively pull back.

“Your father,” he repeated, his voice barely a whisper, yet it resonated with an unspoken threat, a deep, unsettling current of warning. He paused, then without another word, he pushed the door open and stepped out, disappearing into the dim corridor.

Iris watched the empty doorway, her breath held captive in her lungs. The air in her office, suddenly bereft of his magnetic presence, felt cold and hollow. She exhaled slowly, her mind racing. *Your father.* The way he’d said it. Not a question, but a confirmation. A dark understanding.

Then she saw it. On the corner of her desk, half-hidden beneath a stack of printouts, was a small, ornate silver letter opener she hadn’t noticed before. It wasn’t hers. It bore an unfamiliar, elegant crest. It had to be his. And just beneath it, where it had been obscured, was a thin, embossed card. A business card, but not Knox’s. This one simply bore a name, a cryptic address in Zurich, and the words, *‘Athena Global Holdings: Fiduciaries of Legacy.’*
