Chapter 12

As Cem's grip tightened on her wrist, Lara's first instinct was to elbow him, but then—unexpectedly—the touch softened, his thumb tracing the point where her pulse hammered.

"Your heartbeat gives you away," Cem said, his voice dangerously low in the dark stairwell. "Fear, or something else?"

Lara clenched her teeth. *Don't answer. Don't give him that power.*

"Let me go." Her voice was huskier than she wanted.

"I can't." Cem pressed her against the wall, his body so close she could barely breathe. "You're the most valuable piece in this game, Lara. And I'm good at protecting valuable things."

"Protecting?" She met his eyes, anger and something else—that dangerous pull she refused to name—churning inside her. "You're going to sell me."

"I'm going to *have* you sold." His correction was sharp as a blade. "The difference matters."

The motion sensor light went out, plunging them into darkness. Lara's breath hitched. She could only sense Cem's presence through his chest against hers, his breath on her cheek.

"Why your mother?" Cem asked, his voice different now—not controlled, almost... pained. "Why is the Collector your mother?"

The question was so unexpected that Lara's heart stopped for a moment. *He already knew. He knew everything.*

"You—"

"Three years." Cem's voice hardened. "I've been hunting the Collector for three years. And she's in my lab, in my academy, in my..." He stopped. "She's your mother."

The light flickered back on and Lara saw his face—marked with anger, disappointment, and betrayal. But worst was the pain in his eyes. Real and raw.

"Yes," Lara said, trying to keep her voice level. "My mother is Aylin Özkan. The Collector. And you entrapped her daughter."

Cem's jaw tightened. "This wasn't a trap, Lara. This is... complicated."

"Oh, complicated?" Lara laughed, but there was no joy in it. "You approached me. You used me. You gave me—" She stopped, but the words had already escaped. *You gave me hope.*

"What did I give you?" Cem's hand slid up from her wrist, to her arm, to her shoulder. His touch was fire. "Tell me, Lara. What did I give you that makes you this angry?"

*Everything.* But she couldn't say that. If she did, she'd lose.

"Nothing," she said coldly. "You're nothing."

Cem's eyes narrowed and then—the movement was so sudden Lara couldn't even breathe—he kissed her.

The kiss was brutal, angry, and desperately hungry. While Lara's mind said "no," her body answered "yes." Her hands pressed against Cem's chest—to push or pull, she no longer knew.

Cem pulled back first, resting his forehead against hers. Their breaths mingled.

"Nothing?" he whispered. "Still nothing?"

Lara's lips trembled. *You need to push him away. You need to run. This is a game, all a game.*

"This doesn't change—" Her voice cracked. "This doesn't change that you're going to sell me."

"No." Cem's hand cupped her face, thumbs under her chin. "I'm going to protect you."

"Lie."

"Truth." His eyes locked on hers. "There's a plan for tomorrow's auction, Lara. But for it to work, you need to trust me."

"Trust you?" Lara pulled back with a bitter laugh. "You haven't even told me who you are. Who you really are."

Cem's face closed off. "You know everything you need to know."

"No, I don't!" Lara's voice echoed. "I know you work in the underground market. I know you use your students. But I don't know *why*. Why, Cem? For money? For power? Or—"

"For revenge."

The word hung between them, heavy and dark.

Lara's heart began pounding in her chest. "What?"

Cem turned and walked to the stairs, his back to her. His shoulders were tense, hands clenched.

"Twelve years ago, my father was killed," he said, his voice controlled. "He was an art historian, a curator. An honest man. And he was killed over a forged painting—a forgery made by your mother."

Lara's world stopped.

*No. No, no, no.*

"Cem—"

"My father thought that painting was authentic," Cem continued, his voice now trembling. "He sold it to a famous collector. When the collector learned the truth, he held my father responsible. Threatened him with loss of reputation, with court. My father couldn't bear it. He jumped from his office in Beyoğlu."

Lara's eyes filled with tears. *God. God.*

"I was sixteen," Cem said, finally turning to her. His eyes were dry but the pain in them wounded Lara. "I witnessed it. I watched. And I swore—I swore I would find the person who created that forgery. The Collector."

"My mother—" Lara's voice failed. "My mother might not have known—"

"She knew!" Cem's voice cracked. "Her signature is there. The secret mark she used back then—a flawed brushstroke on a butterfly wing. I've seen it. I saw it in my lab, in your work."

Lara stumbled back. Her memory flashed to that night in the studio with her mother—teaching her how to make the butterfly mark, saying "It's our family tradition."

*Was this why? Was all of this for his revenge?*

"Then I'm—" Lara's voice broke. "I'm just a tool? To get to my mother?"

Cem's face changed, anger giving way to something else—regret? Or pain?

"You were," he said quietly. "In the beginning, you were. The first day I saw you—when I learned you were Aylin's daughter—the plan was perfect. I would approach you, gain your trust, reach the Collector."

"But?" Lara's chest tightened with pain.

"But you became real." Cem walked toward her, each step heavy. "You—Lara—you became real. Your intelligence, your passion, that damn vulnerability. It all became real and I—" He stopped, jaw clenched. "I was fool enough to fall in love with you."

The world shifted on its axis.

"You're lying," Lara whispered, but her voice lacked conviction.

"I wish I were." Cem was in front of her now, hands on her arms. "I wish this were a lie, Lara. Because this—this makes protecting you harder."

"You can't protect me." Tears streamed down her cheeks. "You've destroyed me."

"I know." Cem pressed his forehead to hers. "And if I could go back and change it—if I could take back that first day—"

"Would you?" Lara locked eyes with him. "Would you really?"

A long silence. Then:

"No."

The answer was like a slap. Honest, brutal, and devastating.

"Because knowing you—" Cem's voice broke. "Knowing you was more real than twelve years of pain. And if that makes me a monster, I accept it."

Lara pulled away from him, stumbling to the top of the stairs. Her head was spinning, her heart shattered.

"What's the plan for tomorrow?" she finally asked, her voice flat.

"The Codex." Cem's voice became professional again—his defense mechanism. "We'll display the Codex at the auction. All the buyers will be there. Including your mother."

"And?"

"And Interpol will raid." Cem's eyes locked on hers. "They'll arrest everyone. Including the Collector."

Lara's breath caught. "So my mother..."

"Will be arrested. Yes." There was no regret in Cem's face. "But not you. I'll protect you, Lara. I've guaranteed it."

"How?"

"You're my informant." Cem moved closer. "On official record, you told me everything—your mother's operation, the Codex, everything. Interpol will put you in witness protection."

"But I—" Lara's mind spun. "I'd be betraying her."

"Yes."

"You're asking me to betray my mother."

"No." Cem's hand touched her cheek. "I'm asking you to survive. That's the difference."

Lara closed her eyes. The tears were hot.

*My mother or my life? Love or loyalty?*

"You have time," Cem said softly. "Until morning. But you need to decide, Lara. Will you stay with her, or—"

His phone rang. Cem's face changed as he looked at the screen.

"Who?" Lara asked.

"Interpol." He answered. "Kara."

Lara watched his face change color—from pale to horrified.

"When?" Cem's voice was hard. "How many?"

He paused, listening. Then hung up.

"What happened?" Lara's heart was racing.

Cem looked at her, and the fear in his eyes froze Lara's insides.

"They've taken your mother," he said. "The Consortium kidnapped your mother. And they want the Codex as ransom—"

The door slammed open and Kerem burst in, his face covered in sweat.

"Boss, you need to check the security cameras," he said breathlessly. "There's someone in the academy. And she—"

He held out the screen to Cem.

Lara looked and her blood ran cold.

The footage showed the academy's underground archive. And there, among the artworks, stood a masked figure—the Codex in one hand and a match in the other.

The camera zoomed in and the figure removed the mask.

Lara's mother.

But she hadn't been kidnapped. She was smiling.

And behind her, written on the wall in red letters: "THE GAME IS JUST BEGINNING."
