Episode 3: The Bell

Romania. 6 hours by plane. 4 hours by car. 2 hours on foot.

The Carpathians don’t want them here.

Elias feels it in his teeth. A pressure. Like the altitude, but wrong. Artificial. Hope called it “the hum” back at the house. Ward E’s heartbeat.

The facility sits in a valley that doesn’t exist on maps. Stone arches swallowed by forest. No fence. No guards. Just a bell tower. Cracked. Silent.

For now.

“163 heat signatures,” Adrian whispers. He’s got a thermal scope aimed at the east wing. “All underground. All... standing.”

“Waiting,” Maya corrects. Her hand doesn’t leave Hope’s shoulder. Hope hasn’t spoken since the plane. She just walks. East. Always east. Like a compass with no needle.

Elias holds the broken key. Useless now. Or so Evelyn thinks.

They reach the main doors. Oak. Iron-banded. No lock. No keyhole. Just a handprint carved into the wood. Small. A child’s.

Hope steps forward before anyone can stop her. Presses her palm to the carving.

The bell rings.

5AM. Even though it’s 3PM.

The doors grind open. Dust. Cold air. And the smell of lilies. Hundreds of them. Rotting.

Inside: a foyer. Empty. Except for one thing.

A chair. Ornate. Victorian. Turned backwards. Just like the one in the cover art.

And sitting in it, back to them, is Evelyn Ward.

“Welcome home, children,” she says without turning. “317. 348. And...” she counts the shuffling feet behind Elias. “41. You brought the whole family. How sentimental.”

Marcus raises his knife. “Step away from the chair.”

Evelyn laughs. “This isn’t a hostage situation, 302. This is a reunion.” She finally turns.

She’s not alone.

Standing behind her, in two perfect rows, are 16 kids. Ages 9 to 17. Foreheads numbered. 500 to 515. The youngest, 512, can’t be older than 9. He’s holding a white lily. The petals are black at the edges.

“Where are the rest?” Elias asks. His voice is steel. But his hands shake.

“Down,” Evelyn says. “Sleeping. Dreaming of East. Until their brothers and sisters call them home.” She looks at Hope. “Isn’t that right, 348?”

Hope flinches. “Don’t call me that.”

“Oh, but you are. You were my best work. The only one who walked out of Ward E alone. Do you know why?” Evelyn stands. Steps toward them. The 16 kids move with her. Perfect sync. “Because you were the key. Not that piece of metal 317 clings to. You. Your mind is the only door that opens from both sides.”

Adrian pulls Elias back. “She’s stalling. The hum’s getting louder.”

He’s right. The pressure in Elias’s teeth is now a drill. The bell tower above them groans. Not wind. Something waking up.

Evelyn stops three feet from Hope. “Phase One was obedience. Phase Two is choice.” She holds out her hand. “Come with me, Hope. Down. Open the door. Tell them to walk East. End this. No one else has to break.”

Hope looks at Elias. Then at the 41 behind him. At 512, clutching his dying lily.

Then she speaks. Clear. Loud. Herself.

“No.”

The hum stops.

For one second, total silence.

Then the bell SCREAMS.

Not a ring. A shriek. Metal tearing. The tower cracks.

And from underground, 147 voices answer.

“EAST.”

The floor shakes. Doors blow open down the corridors. Footsteps. Hundreds. Running. Toward them.

Evelyn doesn’t move. She just smiles. “Wrong choice, 348.”

512 drops his lily. Looks up at Elias. And speaks with Evelyn’s voice:

“Tag, 317. You’re it.”

The 16 kids scatter. Into the dark. Laughing.

The stampede hits in 10 seconds.

Elias has 3 options:

1. Fight: 41 vs 163. They won’t all walk out.

2. Run: Seal Ward E. Bury them. Bury Hope’s past.

3. Follow: Go down. Find the Architect’s room. End this at the source.

He looks at Hope. She’s already made her choice. She grabs his hand.

“Down,” she says. “We end it where it started.”

Elias nods. Turns to his family.

“Adrian, Maya, take 20 and hold the foyer. No one gets past. The rest of you—”

“With you,” Marcus cuts in. “Always.”

The bell screams again. The first wave of Ward E rounds the corner. Eyes blank. Moving East. Toward Hope.

Elias steps in front of her. Broken key in one fist. Hope’s hand in the other.

“Then we go to hell,” he says.

And they run down. Into the dark. Into East.
